About This Plant

One of the few plants that actually gets easier to own in a Canadian winter. The Red Siam comes from the shaded forest floors of Southeast Asia, where it grew under a canopy with no direct sun and inconsistent water. That background is why it fits a north-facing condo in Toronto or a dim room in a Quebec apartment better than most plants sold as low-maintenance.

Once only grown for kings. In Southeast Asia, this plant was so rare only royalty could own one. Now it is $40 and ships to your door.

NASA tested it for the space station. It made the list of plants that pull benzene and formaldehyde out of indoor air.

Thais give it at housewarming parties. Called Sri Siam, it is a traditional good luck gift when someone moves into a new home.

Things to Know Before You Buy

Winter Slowdown

Growth slows and the plant drinks less. No leaf drop, no dormancy.

Toxicity

Toxic to cats, dogs, and people if ingested. Confirmed by the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). Keep on a high shelf.

Pests

Check leaves for mealybugs and spider mites each time you water, especially in dry Canadian winters.

Why Buy This Plant

Colourful leaves that hold in low light. No direct sun needed.

Handles dry Canadian winters without a humidifier. Forced-air heat does not bother it.

Water roughly once a week in summer and barely at all in winter. That covers most of what it needs.

Common Questions

Does the Red Siam need a lot of light?

No. It grows in low to medium indirect light, which makes it good for dim rooms. Brighter indirect light keeps the red and pink colours strong, but keep it out of direct sun which scorches the leaves. Read our guide to light requirements for indoor plants if you are unsure which window works best.

Is the Red Siam safe for cats and dogs?

No. It is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses because the leaves and sap hold calcium oxalate crystals. Keep it on a high shelf, or choose a pet-safe plant if your pet chews on leaves.

Why are the leaves turning yellow?

Yellow leaves usually mean too much water or soil that stays soggy. Let the top of the soil dry out before the next watering and make sure the pot drains. A cold draft from a door or window in a Canadian winter can also yellow the leaves.

Will the Red Siam survive a Canadian winter indoors?

Yes, if you keep it in a warm room. It is comfortable between 18 and 27C, that is 65 to 80F, and should not drop below 16C or 60F. Keep it away from cold windows and heat vents, water less in winter, and read our tips on keeping plants alive in winter for more

Soleil : indirect
