Care Guide

Light Requirements

Aphelandra Zebra thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch its leaves, while too little light can lead to poor growth and reduced flowering. Place the plant near a bright window where it can receive filtered sunlight. Plant Light Requirements

Watering Needs

Water the plant regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Aphelandra Zebra prefers high humidity, so misting the leaves regularly can help maintain the required moisture levels. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely. Indoor Plant Watering

Soil Preferences

Use a well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter. A mix of peat, perlite, and pine bark works well to provide the necessary drainage and nutrients for Aphelandra ZebraIndoor Plant Potting Mix

Temperature and Humidity

Aphelandra Zebra thrives in temperatures between 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C) and requires high humidity. To maintain optimal humidity levels, mist the leaves regularly or place a humidifier nearby.

Fertilization

Feed Aphelandra Zebra with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in the fall and winter when growth slows. Natural Fertilizer

Pruning and Maintenance

Aphelandra Zebra requires minimal pruning. Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves to maintain the plant’s appearance and health. Repot the plant every 2-3 years to refresh the soil and accommodate its growth.

Propagation Methods and Tips

Stem Cuttings

Propagating Aphelandra Zebra is best done through stem cuttings taken in the spring or early summer.

Steps:

  1. Take a 4-6 inch cutting from a healthy stem, ensuring it has at least two leaves.
  2. Dip the cut end in rooting hormone to encourage root development.
  3. Place the cutting in a pot with well-draining soil and water lightly.
  4. Keep the cutting in a warm, humid environment with indirect light until roots develop.
Common Pests

Spider Mites

Spider mites are tiny pests that can cause damage to Aphelandra Zebra by sucking the sap from the leaves, leading to yellowing and stippling. They thrive in dry conditions, so maintaining adequate humidity and regularly misting the plant can help deter them. If an infestation occurs, wipe the leaves with a damp cloth or use insecticidal soap. Learn More

Mealybugs

Mealybugs are small, white, cotton-like insects that can infest the plant, particularly around the leaf bases. They feed on plant sap, causing stunted growth and leaf yellowing. To treat an infestation, wipe the affected areas with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol or apply insecticidal soap. Learn More

Scale Insects

Scale insects are small, oval-shaped pests that attach themselves to the leaves and stems of the plant. They can cause leaf yellowing and drop if left untreated. Remove scales manually with a soft cloth or treat the plant with insecticidal soap. Learn More

Fungus Gnats

Fungus gnats are small, black flies that lay their eggs in moist soil. While the adults are more of a nuisance, the larvae can damage the roots of the plant. To prevent fungus gnats, allow the soil to dry out between waterings and consider using sticky traps to catch the adult gnats. Learn More

Preventative Measures

To keep pests at bay, regularly inspect your Aphelandra Zebra for signs of infestation, maintain proper watering practices, and ensure good air circulation around the plant. Quarantining new plants before introducing them to your collection can also help prevent the spread of pests.

Benefits of Aphelandra Zebra

Note on Appearance

While photographs represent the typical appearance of Aphelandra Zebra, individual plants may vary slightly in size and color, adding to each plant's unique charm.

Light: Medium - Bright

Ensure your Aphelandra Zebra Plant receives consistent, moderate light. Too much or too little light can affect its growth and flowering. Aim for a balance to maintain its health and vibrancy.

Sun: Indirect

Aphelandra Zebra Plants thrive in bright, indirect sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight exposure, as it can scorch the leaves. Place them near a window with filtered light or in a well-lit room.

Water: When half dry

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch, usually once a week. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely between waterings, as this can stress the plant.

Humidity: High

Maintain moderate to high humidity levels around your Aphelandra Zebra Plant. Mist the leaves regularly or place a tray of water nearby to increase humidity. Avoid placing the plant near drafty areas or heating vents.

Pet Friendly: Yes

You can feel comfortable having this plant around your home in the potential case where your pet feels like nibbling on it. However, we typically recommend keeping your pets from eating any of your houseplants.

Pro Tip

To encourage prolific flowering and maintain the health of your Aphelandra Zebra Plant, consider using a balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season. Apply the fertilizer at half strength every two to four weeks to provide essential nutrients for vibrant blooms and lush foliage. Remember to dilute the fertilizer properly to prevent root burn and flush the soil with water periodically to remove any buildup of salts.

MyGreenscape's pot sizes chart is a great resource for finding your perfect fit. Our easy-to-read chart takes out all the guesswork and helps you quickly choose the right size for your plant.

Smaller pots are best for seedlings or small plants just starting out. These tend to be shallow but wide, allowing enough room for the roots of the young plant but not too much where they get overcrowded. Medium-sized pots are ideal when your plant has grown from its infancy and is ready for more space. These are deeper and wider than small pots, so that it can accommodate larger root systems - making sure your plant gets enough nourishment while still giving it breathing room. Large pots are top choice if you have an established plant in need of lots of space - think trees and large shrubs! The spacious depth and width allow plenty of room for deep root systems without struggling for air or light.

Unique as the Zebra

When I saw pictures of the Zebra Plant on Mygreenscape.ca I just knew I had to order it. It is such a striking plant. I appreciate its uniqueness. The leaves are a deep green with very light lime stripes on each vein. Remarkable! There's a crinkle to the leaves also. The plant is larger than I ordered. Bonus! This plant's flower has a unique spiked shape and at the bottom of the yellow bloom there is a burnt orange tinge. There is a second flower bud emerging too. I'm so happy with this amazing plant. It looks great in any room I've placed it in. A wonderful addition to my plant collection that continues to grow. So happy!!!
