How to Care for Sansevieria Snake Plants

Snake plants handle almost any light. Truly. But they grow fastest in bright, indirect light near an east or south-facing window. Laurentii sansevieria keeps its yellow edges brighter in 4 to 6 hours of filtered sun. And sansevieria moonshine holds that silvery-green glow best in medium light. But they also tolerate dim corners. So a north-facing bathroom works. A shadowy hallway works too. Just expect slower growth. During Canadian winters, daylight drops to 9 hours in December. So shift plants 30 cm closer to windows from November through March.

Common Problems with Sansevieria Snake Plants

Yellow, soft leaves mean one thing. Root rot from overwatering. So act fast. Lift the plant from its pot. Trim away mushy, dark roots with clean scissors. Let the remaining roots air-dry for 2 to 3 hours. Then repot in fresh, well-draining cactus mix. And cut your watering schedule in half going forward.

Dry furnace air during Canadian winters causes most brown tips. Humidity below 20% crisps edges within weeks. Fluoride in Toronto tap water can also trigger this. So let tap water sit out overnight before using it. And group your sansevieria with other houseplants to raise local humidity by 5 to 10%.

Floppy leaves usually mean too little light or too much water. Sometimes both at once. Move the plant to a brighter spot within 1 metre of a window. And check the soil before watering. If it's damp at 5 cm deep, wait 2 more weeks. Tall cultivars like sansevieria zeylanica may also flop if they outgrow a small pot.

Snake plants grow slowly. That's normal. But truly stalled growth for 6 months or longer points to low light or a depleted pot. So shift the plant closer to a bright window from April through September. And feed once a month with half-strength liquid fertiliser during those months only.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sansevieria Snake Plants

Every 3 to 4 weeks in summer. Every 5 to 7 weeks in winter. That's it. So always check the soil first. Push your finger 5 cm deep. Dry? Water until it drains from the bottom. Damp? Wait 10 more days. And reduce watering sharply from November through March.

Yes. Sansevieria zeylanica and the classic snake plant both tolerate low light better than almost any houseplant on the Canadian market. But growth slows dramatically in dim spaces. You might see 1 to 2 new leaves per year instead of 3 to 4.

Mildly toxic. All sansevieria varieties contain saponins that cause nausea, drooling, and diarrhoea if cats or dogs chew the leaves. But the effect is rarely serious. So place pots on high shelves or hanging planters for pets that chew plants.

Underwatering. And dehydration shows up this way. Thick leaves store water, so they wrinkle when reserves run low. Give the plant a deep drink until water drains from the bottom. Leaves plump back up within 3 to 5 days.
