Fading or absent yellow margins on new growth is almost always caused by propagating the plant from a leaf cutting. Laurentii grown from leaf cuttings revert to the non-variegated all-green form (Sansevieria trifasciata) because the yellow margin is a chimeral variegation that cannot be reproduced through leaf cuttings. Only division of the original plant preserves the yellow margin. If your plant has been divided correctly from the parent, new leaves should arrive with yellow margins. If margins are genuinely fading on an established plant, it needs more light.

The thick, waxy, upright leaves store substantial water and the plant can go four to eight weeks without water in Canadian winter conditions without showing any stress. Yes. The ASPCA confirms Dracaena trifasciata (Sansevieria) is toxic to cats and dogs. The leaves contain saponins causing vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, and nausea if chewed. Keep out of reach of pets and small children.

Yellowing, mushy leaves at the base of a Sansevieria are the classic sign of root rot from overwatering. Remove the affected leaves immediately. Take the plant out of its pot, cut away any black or mushy roots with clean scissors, allow the roots to dry for a day, and repot into fresh, well-draining soil. Reduce watering to once every four to six weeks going forward. This is the one way to seriously damage a Sansevieria.

It survives in very low light longer than almost any other houseplant but it cannot grow indefinitely in a room with no natural light at all. Without any natural light, growth stops completely and the plant slowly declines over months. It handles north-facing rooms, dim hallways, and low-light offices with minimal natural light better than almost anything else available.
