I received my string of turtle today, though I ordered a small one most of the leaves look healthy and happy I kind of wish it had a few more strands but I’m going to work hard to make sure it’s happy and healthy! For winter protection they wrapped it in cotton I’m super happy with all my plants so far!

The Stromanthe Triostar was the last plant I unwrapped from my second order from mygreenscape.ca. I gasped when I saw this beautiful plant with its long leaves of dark and light pink and green. The underside of the leaves are deep pink. And it has some stripes, especially underneath. She is very healthy and has a few new leaves unfurling. All the plants were packaged up very well. Most indoor ferns want bright, indirect light. Think 3 to 5 feet from a north or east window. But direct Toronto summer sun will scorch delicate fronds within hours. So sheer curtains are your best friend. Lower-light tolerant options include the Boston Fern and Lemon Button Fern. Brighter-light lovers include the Staghorn and Blue Star Fern.

Common Fern Problems and Quick Fixes

Crispy fronds usually mean low humidity or dry air from heating vents. Move the pot to a bathroom or add a humidifier. And for variety-specific fixes, see our Boston Fern care guide.

Yellow fronds almost always mean overwatering. Check the top 1 inch of soil. Soggy? Skip watering for 4 to 5 days and inspect drainage holes. But if yellowing only hits older outer fronds, that's natural shedding. Just trim them at the base.

Tiny webs under fronds mean spider mites. White fluffy spots mean mealybugs. Hard brown bumps mean scale. So inspect your fern weekly and wipe fronds with a damp cloth. And treat with insecticidal soap every 7 days for 3 weeks.

Either thirsty or root-bound. Water thoroughly first, letting excess drain. If fronds don't perk up in 24 to 48 hours, slip the plant from its pot. Circling roots mean it's time to size up one pot.

Fern Plant FAQs

Yes, most true ferns are non-toxic to pets. Boston, Lemon Button, Staghorn, Blue Star, Crispy Wave and Silver Lace are all considered pet-safe. But asparagus fern isn't a true fern and is toxic. So double-check names before you buy.

Roughly every 7 to 10 days from November through March. Dry furnace air pulls moisture faster than you'd think. So finger-test 1 inch down before pouring and never let the pot sit in water.

Most benefit from one in winter. Indoor humidity in the GTA can drop below 20% when heating runs nonstop. And ferns want 50 to 70%. So a small cool-mist humidifier or a humid bathroom goes a long way.

Crispy brown tips usually signal low humidity or chlorinated tap water. Let water sit 24 hours before pouring. And bump humidity above 50% using a pebble tray, humidifier or bathroom location.

The Crispy Wave Fern and Blue Star Fern are the most forgiving. Both tolerate slightly drier air than classic ferns. And they handle missed waterings without throwing a tantrum.
