Common Questions
How often should I water the Alocasia Frydek Variegated?
Water when the top half of the soil feels dry. In spring and summer, every seven to ten days. In a Canadian winter, cut back to every two weeks or more. The variegated leaves are less efficient at photosynthesis and the plant grows more slowly, so it uses less water. Our indoor plant watering guide shows how to check soil moisture correctly.
Why does it need more light than a regular Frydek?
The cream and white variegated sectors in each leaf contain less chlorophyll, the pigment that converts light into energy. This means the plant has to work harder to produce the same amount of energy as an all-green plant. Bright indirect light is essential to keep it healthy. Read our guide to light requirements for indoor plants to find the right spot.
Is the Alocasia Frydek Variegated toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes. The ASPCA confirms Alocasia spp. is toxic to cats and dogs. The leaves contain insoluble calcium oxalates, which cause mouth pain, drooling, swelling, and vomiting if chewed. Keep it on a high shelf that pets and small children cannot reach.
Will the variegation stay or change over time?
Variegation in this plant is genetic and random. Each new leaf will express the pattern differently. Some leaves may show more cream, others less. The pattern cannot be controlled. Occasionally a plant will revert and produce a fully green leaf. This is normal and does not mean the plant is unhealthy. Brighter indirect light generally encourages more vivid variegation.
Will it survive a Canadian winter indoors?
Yes, but it needs more attention than most houseplants in winter. Keep it above 18°C, away from cold glass and heating vents. Boost humidity with a humidifier. The variegated leaves are more sensitive to dry air than green leaves. Growth slows significantly from November to February but the plant stays alive. Our tips on keeping plants alive in winter cover what to watch for.
