About This Plant

Alocasia Silver Dragon (Alocasia baginda) is native to the limestone hills and humid understorey forests of Borneo, Southeast Asia. It belongs to the jewel Alocasia group, a category of small, highly detailed Alocasias prized for their textured leaf surfaces.

The metallic scale texture is what sets it apart. The silvery sheen and deeply recessed dark veins give each leaf a three-dimensional, almost sculptural look that reads differently depending on the light angle. It stays small and tidy, making it a strong desk or shelf plant in a Canadian apartment where space is limited.

Keep it away from pets and children. The ASPCA confirms Alocasia spp. is toxic to cats and dogs. The leaves contain insoluble calcium oxalates that cause mouth pain, drooling, swelling, and vomiting if chewed. Keep it on a high shelf or in a room pets cannot reach.

It needs an airy soil mix, not standard potting soil. This plant needs a chunky, well-draining aroid mix with orchid bark and perlite so the roots get oxygen between waterings. Standard potting soil holds too much moisture and leads to root rot quickly.

Winter Slowdown

The Silver Dragon is one of the few compact Alocasias that can go into true dormancy. November onward it may drop some or all of its leaves and retreat into the underground corm. This looks alarming but is completely normal.

Toxicity

Toxic to cats and dogs, confirmed by the ASPCA (Alocasia spp.). The leaves, stems, and sap all contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Contact with the sap can irritate skin and eyes. If ingested, the crystals cause intense burning and swelling of the mouth and throat, drooling, and vomiting. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children at all times.

Pests

Check the undersides of leaves for spider mites each time you water. The dry heated air of Canadian homes from November onward is the primary condition that attracts spider mites to this plant. Also check for mealybugs at the base of the stems.

Other Plants You Might Like

Not sure this is the right fit? Here are three other plants our Canadian customers love. All ship across Canada and thrive in Canadian homes.

Alocasia Dragon Scale. Same textured family.

For the same scale-like leaf texture in a slightly larger form, the Alocasia Dragon Scale has deeper corrugations and a more metallic silver-green surface.

Alocasia Bambino. Compact and striking.

For a compact Alocasia with bold white veining on dark leaves, the Alocasia Bambino stays the same small size and suits shelves and desks just as well.

Alocasia Frydek. Velvety collector choice.

For another rare, compact Alocasia with a completely different leaf surface, the Alocasia Frydek has deep green velvety leaves with bold white veins.

Common Questions

How often should I water the Alocasia Silver Dragon?

Water when the top half of the chunky aroid mix feels dry. In spring and summer that is roughly every seven to ten days. In a Canadian winter, cut back to every two to three weeks. This plant is very sensitive to overwatering. Our indoor plant watering guide shows how to check soil moisture correctly.

What kind of soil does it need?

It needs a chunky, well-draining aroid mix, not standard potting soil. A blend of orchid bark, perlite, and a small amount of peat or coco coir gives the roots the oxygen and drainage they need. Standard potting soil stays too wet and causes root rot quickly with this plant.

Is the Alocasia Silver Dragon toxic to cats and dogs?

Yes. The ASPCA confirms Alocasia spp. is toxic to cats and dogs. The leaves contain insoluble calcium oxalates, which cause mouth pain, drooling, swelling, and vomiting if chewed. Keep it on a high shelf that pets and small children cannot reach.

Why is my Alocasia Silver Dragon losing leaves in winter?

Leaf drop in winter is a normal response to lower light and cooler temperatures in Canadian homes. The plant may drop one or two leaves and slow to near zero growth from November to February. Reduce watering, keep it above 18°C, run a humidifier nearby, and move it to your brightest window. Read our tips on keeping plants alive in winter for more.

How big will it get indoors?

It is a true jewel Alocasia and stays compact, typically reaching 30 to 45 cm tall and wide indoors. It grows slowly and does not outgrow a small pot quickly. This makes it one of the better Alocasias for limited shelf or desk space in Ontario and Quebec.

How to Take Care of Alocasia Silver Dragon

Good to Know

Sun: Indirect

Bright indirect light is ideal. A spot near an east-facing window in a Canadian home gives gentle morning light without scorching the silvery leaf surface. Avoid direct sun which bleaches the silver colour and damages the thick leaves.

Light: Medium to bright indirect

A spot close to an east- or north-facing window works well year-round. The silvery sheen is most vivid in good indirect light. From October to February when Canadian daylight shortens, keep it as close to the brightest window as possible.

Water: When top half of mix is dry

Water thoroughly until it drains, then wait until the top half of the aroid mix feels dry. In a Canadian winter, water every two to three weeks. Never let it sit in standing water. Root rot sets in quickly in this plant.

Humidity: High

Needs humidity above 50 to 60 percent. The dry forced-air heating in Ontario and Quebec homes from November onward is the most common cause of stress in this plant. A humidifier running nearby makes a significant difference through winter.

Pet Friendly: No

Toxic to cats and dogs, confirmed by the ASPCA. Contains insoluble calcium oxalates. Keep it somewhere pets and small children cannot reach.

Pro Tip

The Silver Dragon comes from rocky limestone forest floors and needs excellent drainage and airflow around its roots. Repot into a mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir when you first receive it if it is in standard potting soil. This single change makes a bigger difference to its long-term health than almost anything else.
