About This Plant

Calathea Lancifolia, commonly called the Rattlesnake Plant, is native to the tropical rainforests of Brazil. It grows long, narrow, lance-shaped leaves and blotches on a lighter green wavy background that resembles the skin of a rattlesnake.

The long wavy leaves with bold spots are dramatic from a distance. Unlike the compact round-leafed Calatheas, the Rattlesnake grows tall, narrow leaves with a rhythmic spotted pattern and a wavy edge that creates movement and visual interest across the whole plant.

Safe for cats and dogs. The ASPCA confirms Calathea spp. is non-toxic to cats and dogs. The Rattlesnake Plant is confirmed pet-safe. The Calathea Burle Marxii is another pet-safe Calathea with a very different compact fishbone-patterned look.

It grows taller than most Calatheas and needs more vertical space. The Rattlesnake is one of the larger Calathea varieties commonly available in Canada. At 50 to 70 cm tall it suits a plant stand or a spot on the floor rather than a desk or small shelf.

Winter Slowdown

Growth slows from November onward. The long leaves are particularly visible indicators of stress: they curl inward tightly when the plant is too dry or the air is too cold.
