About This Plant

Calathea Yellow Fusion is native to the tropical rainforests of South America, where it grows in warm, humid, shaded conditions. It produces oval leaves in a striking three-tone variegation of deep green, bright yellow-green, and cream or white.

The warm yellow tones make it unlike any other Calathea. Most Calatheas work in a palette of green, white, pink, or purple. The Yellow Fusion adds genuine warm yellow-green to the mix, which suits rooms with warmer lighting and works well alongside other tropical plants.

Safe for cats and dogs. The ASPCA confirms Calathea spp. is non-toxic to cats and dogs. The Yellow Fusion is confirmed pet-safe. The Calathea Vittata is another pet-safe Calathea with a bold graphic stripe pattern for comparison.

The yellow sections need more light but are also more sensitive. The yellow and cream areas contain less chlorophyll than the green sections, which means the plant needs brighter indirect light than solid-green Calatheas to stay healthy. Why is the yellow fading to green?

Yellow fading to green means the plant is not getting enough bright indirect light. The plant compensates for low light by producing more chlorophyll, which turns the yellow sections green. Sun: Indirect

Bright indirect light is needed to keep the yellow variegation vivid. An east-facing window in a Canadian home is ideal. Direct sun bleaches and burns the yellow sections fastest. Too little light causes the yellow to fade to green.

Light: Medium to bright indirect

A spot close to an east-facing window works best year-round. From October to February in Canada, keep it in the brightest indirect spot available. This is the one Calathea where low light is most damaging to the plant's defining characteristic.

Water: Keep top inch moist, filtered water only

Water when the top inch of soil is slightly dry. Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy. Use filtered or distilled water every time. The yellow and cream areas are more sensitive to fluoride damage than the green sections.

Humidity: High

Needs humidity above 60 percent. The yellow leaf sections lose moisture faster than the darker green areas and brown more quickly in the dry heated air of Ontario and Quebec homes. A humidifier running nearby from November to March is important for this variety.
