Common Questions
How often should I water the Calamondin Orange?
Water when the top two inches of soil feel dry. In spring and summer outdoors this may be every three to five days in warm weather. Indoors in a Canadian winter, every seven to ten days. Never let the soil dry out completely as the leaves yellow and drop. Never leave it in standing water. Our indoor plant watering guide shows how to check moisture correctly.
When should I move it outdoors in Canada?
Move it outdoors after the last frost date in your area, typically late May in Ontario and Quebec. Start it in partial shade and move it to full sun over one to two weeks to prevent sunscorch. It can stay outside until September or until nighttime temperatures regularly drop below 10°C.
Is Calamondin Orange safe for cats and dogs?
No. The ASPCA confirms Citrus spp. is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses. The leaves, fruit peel, and essential oils contain psoralens and limonene, which cause vomiting, diarrhea, depression, and photosensitivity in pets. Keep it in a room that pets cannot access. Fallen fruit and leaves on the floor also pose a risk.
Why is it dropping leaves indoors?
Leaf drop is most commonly triggered by the transition from outdoor summer conditions to indoor winter conditions. The sudden drop in light intensity and humidity causes the tree to shed leaves it can no longer support. Acclimatise it gradually by bringing it into a shaded outdoor spot for a week before moving it inside. Once stable indoors in a south-facing window, leaf drop should stop.
Will it fruit every year?
Yes, with enough sun. Moving the tree outdoors in Canadian summers exposes it to full sun, insects for pollination, and the temperature change between seasons that triggers flowering. The transition back indoors in September also triggers a new flowering cycle. Trees kept entirely indoors may flower and fruit but less prolifically. Keep it in your sunniest south-facing window through winter and outdoors in full sun through summer.
