Lipstick Plant

Native to the humid, tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, the Lipstick Plant is an epiphyte. In the wild, it doesn't grow in the ground but rather nestles in the nooks and crannies of trees, letting its vines drape downwards. Its charming common name comes from the appearance of its flower buds. A brightly colored blossom emerges from a darker, tubular calyx, perfectly resembling lipstick emerging from its tube. The 'Mona Lisa' variety is specifically valued for its robust growth and willingness to flower indoors.

To get those famous blooms, the Lipstick Plant needs a little mimicry of its tropical home. Here are tips for success:

• **Light:** The key to flowers! It needs plenty of bright, indirect light. A spot near an east or west-facing window is ideal. Too little light means lush leaves but no lipstick.
• **Water:** Allow the top quarter of the soil to dry out before watering thoroughly. Ensure the pot has excellent drainage; being an epiphyte, its roots hate sitting in heavy, soggy soil.
• **Humidity:** Loves humidity! Misting regularly, using a pebble tray, or keeping it in a bright bathroom will keep the foliage looking its best and encourage budding.
• **Soil:** Use a very airy, well-draining mix. An orchid mix or standard potting soil cut heavily with perlite and orchid bark works well.
• **Temperature:** Keep it warm, ideally between 65-80°F (18-27°C). Avoid cold drafts near windows in winter.
• **Feeding:** Feed monthly during spring and summer with a phosphorus-rich houseplant fertilizer (diluted to half strength) to encourage blooms.

Lipstick plants are generally resilient, but like many tropicals, they can attract pests if conditions are too dry or stagnant.
