All the Details You Need to Know

The Story Behind This Plant

String of Pearls, botanically Curio rowleyanus (also known as Senecio rowleyanus), is native to the dry regions of southwest Africa, where it trails along the ground and cascades over rocks. It belongs to the Asteraceae family, the same family as daisies and sunflowers.

How to Keep String of Pearls Happy
  • Light: Bright, indirect light with a bit of gentle morning sun works well. Avoid harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the beads.
  • Water: Water only when the soil is completely dry, usually every 2 to 3 weeks in warmer months and less often in winter.
  • Humidity: Low to average humidity is fine, it does not need extra misting.
  • Soil: Use a well draining cactus or succulent mix.
  • Temperature: Normal room temperature is fine, away from cold drafts.

Bring Home String of Pearls

We hand pick each String of Pearls and pack it carefully so it arrives in good shape anywhere in Ontario or Quebec.

Sun: Direct - Indirect

Keep your String of Pearls in a bright room with soft, filtered light. Avoid strong afternoon sun, as it can burn the leaves.

Light: Bright

Keep your String of Pearls in a well-lit spot indoors, like near a sunny window. It should get soft light in the morning but be protected from strong afternoon sun, which can burn its leaves.

Water: When Fully dry

Water your String of Pearls only when the soil is fully dry. It’s safer to underwater than overwater, as too much moisture can cause root rot.

Humidity: Low

String of Pearls grows well in air with 40–50% humidity, similar to most homes. If the air feels very dry, mist the plant lightly or place a small humidifier close to it.

Pet Friendly: Caution

String of Pearls is mildly toxic to pets if eaten. Keep it out of reach of cats and dogs to avoid any health issues.

Pro Tip

String of Pearls doesn’t like too much water. Use well-draining soil and a pot with holes to let extra water out. A terra cotta pot works best because it soaks up extra moisture and keeps the roots healthy.
