How to Care for Your Clay Planters

A planter should sit 1 to 2 inches wider than the root ball. Too big and the soil stays wet, so roots rot. Too small and roots circle, which stalls growth. Check our size guide for exact pot dimensions. And our blog on how to select the right plant pot size walks through every step.

How to Fix Common Clay Planter Problems?

You'll notice a chalky white crust creeping up the pot walls. That's mineral buildup from tap water and fertiliser wicking through the clay. Soak the empty pot in a 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water mix for an hour. Scrub with a stiff brush, rinse, and you're back to fresh terra cotta.

If a clay planter sits outside through a Canadian freeze, water inside the pot expands and splits the walls. You'll find hairline cracks or full breaks by spring. So move unglazed clay indoors before the first frost. And swap to frost-proof glazed ceramic or fibreglass for outdoor winter use.

Clay wicks water away, which is usually a good thing. But in a hot, dry room in summer, a small clay pot can go bone dry in 24 hours. Soak the whole pot in water for 10 minutes before replanting so the walls stay damp longer. And group smaller clay pots together to slow evaporation.

Clay is brittle. One knock against a wall and you get a chip on the rim. File sharp edges with fine sandpaper so you won't cut your hands. And seal small cracks with food-safe epoxy if you want to keep using the pot for plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

For most plants, yes. Clay breathes, drains through the walls, and prevents overwatering problems. But it costs more and dries out faster, so pick based on your watering habits.

Yes. Even though clay is porous, water still pools at the bottom without a hole. And pooled water rots roots within a week or two.

Only in the warm months. Unglazed terra cotta cracks when temperatures swing around freezing. So bring them inside by late October across the GTA.

Brush two coats of a waterproof pot sealer on the inside only, letting each coat dry for 24 hours. This helps with leak-free saucers. But it also reduces the breathability that makes clay great in the first place.

Terra cotta is a type of clay fired at a lower temperature, which gives it that warm orange-red colour. All terra cotta is clay, but not every clay pot is terra cotta. For more on pairing pot size to plant, our comprehensive guide to choosing the right pot size covers it fully.
