How to Care for Snake Plants Indoors

Less is more. Always. Snake plants store water in their thick, upright leaves. So overwatering is the single biggest killer. Water every 3 to 4 weeks in summer and every 5 to 7 weeks in winter. Push your finger 5 cm into the soil and only water when it's bone dry. But a mushy base means root rot from too much water. So let the soil dry out fully before the next drink.

Common Snake Plant Problems and Quick Fixes

A mushy base means root rot from overwatering. Act fast. Lift the plant from its pot and trim away dark, soft roots with clean scissors. Let the healthy roots air-dry for 2 to 3 hours, then repot in fresh, gritty cactus mix. And cut your watering schedule in half going forward.

Brown tips usually mean dry air or cold exposure. Canadian furnaces push humidity below 20 percent from December to March, which crisps edges within weeks. Move pots away from chilly windows and patio doors. And let tap water sit out overnight before using it, since chlorine and fluoride can also trigger browning.

Wrinkled leaves mean underwatering and dehydration. Thick leaves store water, so they shrivel when reserves run low. So give the plant a deep drink until water drains from the bottom. And leaves should plump back up within a few days.

Floppy leaves usually mean too little light or too much water. Sometimes both at once. Shift the plant within 1 metre of a bright window and check that the soil is fully dry before watering again. Tall varieties like zeylanica may also lean if the pot is too small.

Snake Plant FAQs

Every 3 to 4 weeks in summer and every 5 to 7 weeks in winter. Always check the soil first by pushing your finger 5 cm deep. If it's bone dry, water until liquid drains from the bottom. And if it's still damp, wait another week or two.

Yes. Snake plants tolerate low light better than almost any houseplant sold in Canada. But growth slows dramatically in dim spaces, so expect just 1 to 2 new leaves per year. For faster growth, shift the pot closer to an east-facing window.

Mildly toxic. The ASPCA lists Dracaena trifasciata as toxic to cats and dogs due to saponins, which cause drooling and nausea if chewed. But the effect is rarely serious. So place pots on high shelves or hanging planters if your pet is a chewer.

They're the same plant. Botanists reclassified sansevieria as Dracaena trifasciata in 2017. But most Canadian nurseries still sell them under the old name. So snake plant, sansevieria, and Dracaena trifasciata all refer to the same tough, architectural houseplant.
