How to Care for Your Air Plants

Air plants drink through their leaves, not roots. Soak the whole plant in room-temperature water for 20 to 30 minutes once a week. Then shake off the excess and let it dry upside down on a towel for about four hours. In dry Canadian winters, add a mist between soaks. Curling or wrinkled leaves? That's the easiest dehydration cue you'll ever get. See the full air plant care guide for a weekly routine.

How to Fix Common Tillandsia Problems

Curling leaves mean the plant is thirsty. Soak it for 30 minutes in room-temperature water, then let it dry upside down. Within a day the leaves plump up and flatten out. If you forget for a week, do a longer two-hour rehydrating soak. That usually brings it right back.

A soft base is rot from water pooling at the centre. This is the one killer you can't easily undo. Always dry your Tillandsia upside down after soaking, and never leave it sitting in a closed globe with trapped water. If caught early, trim the rotted part with clean scissors and hope it recovers. Prevention is the real fix.

Brown tips usually point to dry air, chlorinated water, or too much sun. Switch to filtered or rain water. Mist between soaks in winter when the furnace runs. And move the plant back from hot south-facing glass. Trim the crispy bits at an angle so they look natural.

If leaves pull away easily from the base, rot has set in. But if only the outer leaves shed after a bloom, that's completely normal. The parent is making pups. Leave them attached until they reach about a third of the parent's size, then gently separate and display them on their own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Correct. Tillandsia are epiphytes, which means they grow on trees and rocks in the wild, not in soil. They absorb water and nutrients through tiny scales on their leaves called trichomes. Planting them in soil actually causes the base to rot. Keep them out in the open air.

Soak once a week in spring and summer. In Canadian winters with the furnace running, bump it to twice a week or add mist sessions between soaks. The real cue is the leaves themselves. Flat and firm means hydrated. Curled and wrinkled means soak now. For a detailed routine, see our air plant care guide.

Yes. Tillandsia are listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs by the ASPCA. Even so, chewed leaves can still upset a curious pet's stomach, so it's smart to display them out of reach or hanging from the ceiling.

Most Tillandsia bloom once in their lifetime, and it takes time. Brighter indirect light and a monthly dose of diluted bromeliad fertiliser usually trigger the cycle. But even without a bloom, a healthy plant will produce pups from its base.

Check for firm, plump leaves, no soft spots at the base, and silvery or bright green colour. Avoid sellers whose photos show yellow, brown, or drooping plants.
