Common Questions
How often should I water the Chinese Evergreen Cutlass?
Water when the top half of the soil is dry. In spring and summer that is roughly once a week. In a Canadian winter, cut back to every ten to fourteen days. Always check the soil first. Our indoor plant watering guide shows exactly how to check before you water.
Can it grow in a room with no windows?
It tolerates very low light better than most plants, including bright artificial light from office fluorescents or grow lights. However, a room with some natural light, even from a north-facing window, will keep it healthier long-term. Growth and colour will be slower in a fully windowless space.
Is the Chinese Evergreen Cutlass toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes. The ASPCA confirms Aglaonema is toxic to cats and dogs. The leaves contain insoluble calcium oxalates, which cause mouth pain, drooling, swelling, and vomiting if chewed. Keep it on a high shelf or in a room that pets cannot reach.
Why are the leaf tips turning brown?
Brown tips are usually caused by dry air or fluoride in tap water. Forced-air heating in Ontario and Quebec homes pulls moisture from the air, which stresses the leaf edges. Try using filtered or overnight-rested tap water, and keep the plant away from heating vents. Read our tips on keeping plants alive in winter for more.
Will it survive a Canadian winter indoors?
Yes. The Cutlass is not frost hardy but handles the warm, dry indoor conditions of Canadian winters well. Keep temperatures above 15°C and away from cold glass and drafts. It slows down from November to February but does not go dormant and stays green year-round.
