About This Plant

The Chinese Evergreen Maria Christina (Aglaonema commutatum ‘Maria Christina’) is a tropical plant from the shaded forest floors of Southeast Asia. It grows glossy leaves patterned in green and silver with a lighter midrib running through the centre.

It handles low-light rooms better than most plants. The Maria Christina holds its silver and green patterning in spots where other plants lose colour and go leggy. It works in north-facing rooms, offices, and hallways away from windows. For another reliable low-light choice, the ZZ Plant handles similar conditions with equal ease.

Keep it away from pets and children. The ASPCA confirms that Aglaonema is toxic to cats and dogs. The leaves contain insoluble calcium oxalates that cause mouth pain, drooling, swelling, and vomiting if chewed. Place it on a high shelf or in a room pets cannot enter.

It is compact and slow-growing. The Maria Christina typically reaches 30 to 45 cm tall indoors and holds its tidy shape for years without regular pruning. It is a good fit for desks, shelves, and small rooms where you want something that stays manageable. The Peperomia Tricolor is another compact, low-maintenance option for small spaces.

Winter Slowdown

Growth slows from November onward and the plant drinks less. Water only when the top half of the soil is dry or drier. Keep it away from cold glass and heating vents, which dry out the leaf tips. Hold off on fertilizer until spring.

Toxicity

Toxic to cats and dogs, confirmed by the ASPCA. The leaves contain insoluble calcium oxalates. Symptoms include mouth pain, drooling, swelling, and vomiting. Keep it on a high shelf out of reach of pets and small children.

Pests

Check leaves for mealybugs and spider mites each time you water, especially from November onward when dry forced-air heating makes plants more vulnerable.

Other Plants You Might Like

Not sure this is the right fit? Here are three other plants our Canadian customers love. All ship across Canada and thrive in Canadian homes.

Chinese Evergreen Silver Bay. Cool silver tones.

If you like the silver patterning on the Maria Christina, the Aglaonema Silver Bay has a similar silver and green look in a slightly larger, fuller plant.

Snake Plant. Nearly indestructible.

For an upright plant that handles the same low-light conditions with even less watering, the Snake Plant is one of the most forgiving options for Canadian homes.

Golden Pothos. Trailing and easy.

If you want a hanging or trailing plant with the same easy-going care, the Golden Pothos handles low light and dry air with no fuss.

Common Questions

How often should I water the Chinese Evergreen Maria Christina?

Water when the top half of the soil is dry. In spring and summer that is about once a week. In a Canadian winter, cut back to every ten to fourteen days. Check the soil before every watering. Our indoor plant watering guide shows exactly how to check moisture levels.

What light does it need in a Canadian home?

Medium to low indirect light works best. A north- or east-facing window is ideal. It handles dim corners better than most houseplants. Direct sun scorches the leaves. Read our guide to light requirements for indoor plants to pick the right spot.

Is the Chinese Evergreen Maria Christina toxic to cats and dogs?

Yes. The ASPCA confirms Aglaonema is toxic to cats and dogs. The leaves contain insoluble calcium oxalates, which cause mouth pain, drooling, swelling, and vomiting if chewed. Keep it on a high shelf that pets cannot reach.

How big does it get indoors?

It typically reaches 30 to 45 cm tall and wide indoors. It is a slow grower with a compact clumping habit, so it stays neat in a pot for several years without outgrowing its space. This makes it well suited to desks, shelves, and small apartments in Ontario and Quebec.

Will it survive a Canadian winter indoors?

Yes. It is not frost hardy but handles warm dry indoor conditions well. Keep temperatures above 15°C and away from cold glass and heating vents. Growth slows from November to February but the plant stays green and does not go dormant. Read our tips on keeping plants alive in winter for more.

How to Take Care of Chinese Evergreen Maria Christina

Good to Know

Sun: Indirect

Keep it out of direct sunlight. A spot a few feet from a north- or east-facing window is ideal in a Canadian home. The silver patterning on the leaves fades in direct sun and scorches easily.

Light: Medium to low indirect

A north- or east-facing window works well year-round. It adapts to bright artificial office lighting too. The silver variegation shows best in medium indirect light and becomes less vivid in very low light.

Water: When top half of soil is dry

Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom, then wait until the top half of the soil is dry before watering again. In a Canadian winter, water less. Never let it sit in standing water as root rot sets in quickly.

Humidity: Tolerates dry air

It handles the dry air from forced-air furnaces in Ontario and Quebec homes without needing a humidifier. If leaf tips start to brown, move it away from heating vents or set it on a pebble tray.

Pet Friendly: No

Toxic to cats and dogs, confirmed by the ASPCA. Contains insoluble calcium oxalates. Keep it somewhere pets and small children cannot reach.

Pro Tip

Dust settles on the glossy patterned leaves and blocks light, which matters most during short winter days in Canada. Wipe each leaf with a damp cloth to keep the surface clean and the silver markings vivid.
