Common Questions
How often should I water the Calathea Beauty Star?
Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Water when the top inch feels slightly dry, roughly every five to seven days in spring and summer and every seven to ten days in a Canadian winter. Always use filtered or overnight-rested tap water, not straight tap water, to avoid fluoride damage. Our indoor plant watering guide shows how to check moisture correctly.
Why are the leaf edges turning brown?
Brown edges on Calathea are almost always caused by one of two things: fluoride in tap water or air that is too dry. Switch to filtered water or water left overnight in an open container. If the air is dry from forced-air heating in Ontario or Quebec, move it away from vents and run a humidifier nearby. Read our guide to light requirements for indoor plants to also check placement.
Is the Calathea Beauty Star safe for cats and dogs?
Yes. The ASPCA confirms Calathea spp. is non-toxic to cats and dogs. It is confirmed pet-safe and a good choice for homes where pets and plants share the same space.
Why does it move its leaves?
All Calatheas fold their leaves upward at night and open them again in the morning. This movement is called nyctinasty and is driven by changes in light and is produced by small water-filled cells at the base of each leaf stalk that expand and contract. It is completely normal and a sign of a healthy plant.
Will it survive a Canadian winter indoors?
Yes but it needs attention. The dry forced-air heating in Ontario and Quebec homes is the biggest challenge. Keep it above 18°C, run a humidifier nearby, keep the soil moist, and use filtered water. Growth slows from November to February but the plant stays green. Read our tips on keeping plants alive in winter for more.
