About This Plant

Calathea Beauty Star is native to the tropical rainforests of South America, where it grows on shaded forest floors in permanently humid, warm conditions. Like all Calatheas, it folds its leaves upward at night and opens them again each morning in a movement called nyctinasty. That’s why the whole Calathea family is nicknamed prayer plants.

The silver and pink streaks are what set it apart from other Calatheas. Most Calatheas have green and cream or green and dark-green patterns. The Beauty Star adds pink and silver tones that give it a warmer, more colourful character that reads well even in lower-light spots.

Safe for cats and dogs. The ASPCA confirms Calathea spp. is non-toxic to cats and dogs. The Beauty Star is confirmed pet-safe and one of the better choices for households with pets that want patterned tropical foliage without concern. It needs filtered or distilled water, not straight tap water. Calatheas are very sensitive to fluoride and mineral salts found in Canadian tap water. Winter Slowdown

Growth slows from November onward as Canadian light levels drop. The leaf movements become slightly less pronounced in very low light. How often should I water the Calathea Beauty Star?

Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Water when the top inch feels slightly dry, roughly every five to seven days in spring and summer and every seven to ten days in a Canadian winter. Why are the leaf edges turning brown?

Brown edges on Calathea are almost always caused by one of two things: fluoride in tap water or air that is too dry. Switch to filtered water or water left overnight in an open container. Sun: Indirect

Medium to bright indirect light works best. A north- or east-facing window in a Canadian home is ideal. Avoid direct sun which bleaches the pink and silver patterning and scorches the leaves. It handles lower light better than many tropical plants.

Light: Medium indirect

A spot near a north- or east-facing window works well year-round. From October to February when Canadian daylight shortens, keep it as close to the brightest indirect spot available. Very low light causes the colours to fade and the leaf movements to become less pronounced.

Water: Keep top inch moist, use filtered water

Water when the top inch of soil feels slightly dry. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Use filtered water or tap water left overnight in an open container. Straight tap water contains fluoride that causes brown edges over time in Canadian homes.
