About This Plant

Calathea Makoyana, known as the Peacock Plant or Cathedral Windows, is native to the tropical forests of eastern Brazil. It grows broad, oval leaves on long upright stems. The undersides are a deep purple that mirrors the topside pattern. The clearness of the leaves is one of its most striking features, visible when backlit or when the leaves fold at dusk.

Light passes through the pale leaves and the pattern glows. Unlike most Calatheas with opaque dark leaves, the Peacock Plant has an almost paper-thin, translucent leaf surface that glows when light hits it from behind. The fine dark feather markings appear as silhouettes through the leaf. This quality makes it one of the most visually striking Calatheas to photograph and to see in a bright window.

Safe for cats and dogs. The ASPCA confirms Calathea spp. is non-toxic to cats and dogs. The Peacock Plant is confirmed pet-safe. The Calathea Burle Marxii is another pet-safe Calathea with a fishbone pattern and similar care needs.

It is the most humidity-sensitive Calathea in this range. The thin, translucent leaf surface of the Peacock Plant loses moisture faster than thicker-leafed Calatheas.
