Common Questions
How often should I water the Calathea Makoyana?
Keep the soil consistently moist. Water when the top inch feels slightly dry, every five to seven days in spring and summer, every seven to ten days in a Canadian winter. Always use filtered or overnight-rested tap water. The thin leaves are especially sensitive to fluoride. Our indoor plant watering guide shows how to check moisture correctly.
Why are the leaves going pale or translucent in patches?
Pale patches or spots on the pale leaf surface can indicate spider mite damage. The mites feed on the leaf cells and leave permanently pale stippled marks on the thin translucent surface. Check the underside of every leaf immediately. Spider mites thrive in the dry heated air of Ontario and Quebec homes from November onward. Read our guide to light requirements for indoor plants to also check placement as strong light can also cause bleaching.
Is the Calathea Makoyana safe for cats and dogs?
Yes. The ASPCA confirms Calathea spp. is non-toxic to cats and dogs. The Peacock Plant is confirmed pet-safe.
Why are the edges turning brown so quickly?
The thin translucent leaves of the Peacock Plant lose moisture and brown faster than other Calatheas when humidity drops. This is the most humidity-sensitive Calathea in the family. Switch to filtered water immediately if using tap water, run a humidifier nearby, and keep it away from heating vents. Read our tips on keeping plants alive in winter for more.
Will it survive a Canadian winter indoors?
Yes, but this is the most demanding Calathea through a Canadian winter. The thin leaves stress faster than other varieties in dry heated air. A humidifier is not optional for this plant from November to March. Keep temperatures above 18°C, use filtered water, and keep it away from cold glass and all heating vents.
