About This Plant

Crispy Wave Fern (Asplenium nidus Crispy Wave) is a Japanese-bred cultivar of the Birds Nest Fern, native to tropical and subtropical Asia, Australia, and East Africa. It grows in bright, deep green and reaches 30 to 60 cm tall and wide indoors.

The ruffled wavy edges make it visually textured. The flat frond of the regular Birds Nest Fern is elegant but simple. The Crispy Wave version adds dramatic crinkled ridges that run from midrib to frond edge, creating a sculptural, almost pleated look.

Safe for cats and dogs. The ASPCA confirms Asplenium nidus is non-toxic to cats and dogs. The Crispy Wave, as a cultivar of Asplenium nidus, carries the same confirmed pet-safe status. The Austral Gem Fern is another confirmed pet-safe Asplenium fern with a very different glossy, deeply divided frond.

It handles average Canadian indoor conditions better than most ferns. Like its parent plant, the Crispy Wave tolerates lower humidity and moderate indirect light better than Boston Ferns, Maidenhair Ferns, or most other fern varieties commonly sold in Canada.
