About This Plant

Hoya Australis is native to Australia. Indoors it is a reliable grower that produces clusters of waxy, star-shaped white flowers with a pink-red center. Including a rich, sweet, almost vanilla-like fragrance.

It is a reliable blooming Hoyas. Hoya Australis blooms better than most with adequate bright indirect light and is considered a starter blooming Hoya for this reason. The clusters of waxy star flowers have an intense, sweet, almost vanilla fragrance that fills a room.

Winter Slowdown

Growth slows from November onward but Hoya Australis handles Canadian winter conditions well due to its waxy, water-storing leaves. Reduce watering to every three to four weeks. Keep temperatures above 15 degrees C and in bright indirect light. Do not remove any old flower stalks through winter as these are the blooming points for next season.

How do I get Hoya Australis to bloom?

Bright indirect light is the most important factor. At least three to four hours of bright indirect or gentle direct morning light from an east-facing window. The plant also needs to be established and slightly root-bound, not freshly repotted. Never cut old flower stalks because all future blooms emerge from the same spur. Cutting the spur removes the bloom point permanently.

Why does the flower smell so strong at certain times of day?

Hoya Australis flowers release most of their fragrance in the evening and at night, which is an adaptation to attract nocturnal pollinators. The scent can be very intense in a closed room in the evening. If the fragrance is too strong, move the plant to a different room while it is in bloom. The flowering period for each cluster lasts approximately two to three weeks.

The vines are getting very long but no flowers are appearing. What should I do?

Long vine growth with no flowers usually means the plant needs more light. Move it to a brighter east-facing window. Also check that it is not in a pot that is too large, as Hoyas bloom more reliably when slightly root-bound. Do not cut the vine tips in response to no flowering, as buds form on mature stems rather than new growth.

Can I train it to climb a support?

Yes. Hoya Australis is naturally a climbing vine and benefits from a trellis, moss pole, or wire frame. Training the vines along a support exposes more leaf surface to light and encourages the plant to produce the mature stems from which blooms emerge. Leave the vines on the support undisturbed for the best flowering results.

Water: When top inch to two inches are dry

Water when the top one to two inches of soil feel completely dry. Every ten to fourteen days in spring and summer, every three to four weeks in Canadian winter. The thick waxy leaves store water. Never leave in standing water.

Humidity: Low to moderate
