Common Questions
Will my single Hoya Heart leaf ever grow into a full plant?
Almost certainly not. A single leaf cutting without a node has no growing point from which new stems or leaves can emerge. The leaf may stay alive for years but it will not produce new growth. Only cuttings that include a node, which is the small bump or joint where a leaf attaches to the stem, can develop into a full vining Hoya plant.
The leaf is turning yellow. What does that mean?
A yellowing Hoya Heart leaf is most commonly caused by overwatering. The small pot holds very little soil and the roots rot quickly if kept consistently wet. Water once every three to four weeks and ensure the pot drains completely. Direct harsh afternoon sun can also cause bleaching rather than yellowing.
Is the Hoya Heart safe for cats and dogs?
Yes. The ASPCA confirms Hoya spp. is non-toxic to cats and dogs. The single heart-shaped leaf is also not a physical hazard. Safe for homes with pets and small children.
How long will the single leaf live?
With proper care, a single Hoya Kerrii leaf can survive for several years. It does not grow but it maintains its firm, green, heart-shaped form for a long time. Water sparingly, keep it in bright indirect light, and it will stay looking the same as it does now for years without any significant change.
What is the difference between a single leaf and a full Hoya Kerrii plant?
A full Hoya Kerrii plant is grown from a cutting that included a node, and it develops long vining stems with multiple heart-shaped leaves. It can trail from a shelf, grow to a significant size, and eventually produce clusters of small waxy flowers. A single leaf cutting produces none of these things but requires almost no care and stays green indefinitely on a sunny windowsill.
