Care Guide

Light Requirements

The Philodendron Pink Princess thrives in bright, indirect light to maintain its vibrant pink variegation. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while insufficient light may reduce variegation.  Plant Light Requirements

Watering Needs

Water the plant when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure the soil has proper drainage. During winter, reduce watering frequency as the plant's growth slows.  Indoor Plant Watering

Soil Preferences

Use a well-draining, rich potting mix containing peat moss, perlite, and compost. This ensures proper aeration and moisture retention without waterlogging the roots.  Indoor Plant Potting Mix

Temperature and Humidity

The plant prefers temperatures between 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C). High humidity levels of around 60% are ideal. You can increase humidity by misting the leaves or using a humidifier.

Fertilization

Feed the Philodendron Pink Princess with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce fertilization during the fall and winter months.  Natural Fertilizer

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune to remove any dead or yellowing leaves and to encourage bushier growth. Regular pruning can also help maintain the plant's shape and promote more variegated leaves. Clean the leaves occasionally to remove dust and allow for better photosynthesis.

Propagation Methods and Tips

Stem Cuttings

Propagation is best done through stem cuttings during the spring or early summer.

Steps:

  1. Select a healthy stem with at least two nodes and a variegated leaf.
  2. Cut below a node using a clean, sharp knife or scissors.
  3. Place the cutting in water or moist sphagnum moss until roots develop.
  4. Once roots are established, transplant the cutting into well-draining soil.
Common Pests

Aphids

Aphids can infest new growth, sucking sap and weakening the plant. To treat aphids, wipe the leaves with a damp cloth or spray with insecticidal soap.  Learn More

Mealybugs

Mealybugs appear as white, cottony masses on leaves and stems. Remove them with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol or apply insecticidal soap.  Learn More

FAQs

Why are the pink leaves on my Philodendron Pink Princess turning green?

Insufficient light can cause the pink variegation to fade. Ensure the plant receives bright, indirect light to maintain its coloration.

Can I increase the pink variegation in my Philodendron Pink Princess?

While you cannot change the genetic variegation, providing optimal light conditions can enhance the existing pink coloration.

How often should I repot my Philodendron Pink Princess?

Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Use a pot one size larger with fresh, well-draining soil.

Note on Appearance

While photographs represent the typical appearance of Philodendron Pink Princess, individual plants may vary slightly in size and color, adding to each plant's unique charm.

Sun: Indirect

Provide bright, indirect light for optimal growth. Place it near a window where it can receive filtered sunlight or use artificial grow lights if natural light is limited.

Light: Medium - Bright

While it prefers bright, indirect sunlight, it can tolerate lower light conditions. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch its leaves.

Water: When mostly dry

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, usually once a week. Ensure proper drainage to prevent root rot.

Humidity: High

Philodendron Pink Princess thrives in high humidity environments. Mist the leaves regularly or use a pebble tray filled with water to increase humidity levels. Avoid placing near drafty areas or air vents.

Pet Friendly: Caution

Philodendron Pink Princess may cause adverse reactions if ingested and is moderately toxic to pets. It's advisable to prevent pets from consuming it, as with all plants. The severity of the reaction varies based on the amount ingested. If your pet typically avoids eating plants, this species can still be suitable for your home.

Pro Tip

Philodendron Pink Princess can tolerate low light conditions, but it thrives and develops more variegation in its leaves when placed in medium to bright indirect light. If the leaves appear pale, it could indicate that the plant is receiving too much light. Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight, as this can lead to sunburn and damage the foliage.

Your Complete Guide to Pot Sizes: What Size Should You Choose?

When selecting a pot for your plant, it's important to find the right size. But with all the different options out there, how do you know which one is best? We're here to help!

MyGreenscape's pot sizes chart is a great resource for finding your perfect fit. Our easy-to-read chart takes out all the guesswork and helps you quickly choose the right size for your plant.

Smaller pots are best for seedlings or small plants just starting out. These tend to be shallow but wide, allowing enough room for the roots of the young plant but not too much where they get overcrowded. Medium-sized pots are ideal when your plant has grown from its infancy and is ready for more space. These are deeper and wider than small pots, so that it can accommodate larger root systems - making sure your plant gets enough nourishment while still giving it breathing room. Large pots are top choice if you have an established plant in need of lots of space - think trees and large shrubs! The spacious depth and width allow plenty of room for deep root systems without struggling for air or light.

No matter what size you choose, MyGreenscape has got you covered, with our pot sizes chart guaranteeing you find the perfect fit every time!
