About This Plant

Calathea Vittata is native to the tropical rainforests of South America, where it grows as ground cover in warm, humid, permanently shaded conditions. It produces narrow, lance-shaped leaves in a deep, rich green with crisp, clean white stripes.

The crisp white bands on dark green create a strong graphic pattern. The Vittata has one of the cleaner and most graphic patterns in the Calathea family. The contrast between bright white and deep green is high and reads clearly even from across a room.

Safe for cats and dogs. The ASPCA confirms Calathea spp. is non-toxic to cats and dogs. The Vittata is confirmed pet-safe. The Calathea Musaica Network is another pet-safe Calathea with a very different fine mosaic pattern and similar care needs.

Filtered water is essential for keeping the white stripes clean. The white stripe areas are particularly vulnerable to fluoride and mineral salt damage from Canadian tap water. Always use filtered or overnight-rested water.

Winter Slowdown

Growth slows from November onward but the plant stays green. The white stripes remain vivid through winter as long as the plant receives adequate indirect light. Keep temperatures above 18°C, use filtered water, run a humidifier nearby, and keep it away from cold glass and heating vents.

Keep the soil consistently moist. Water when the top inch of soil feels slightly dry, every five to seven days in spring and summer and every seven to ten days in a Canadian winter. Why are the white stripes turning yellow or brown?

Yellowing or browning within the white stripe areas is almost always caused by fluoride or mineral salts in tap water. Switch to filtered water immediately. The lighter stripe tissue is more sensitive to fluoride than the surrounding dark green leaf. Dry air from heating vents in Ontario and Quebec homes also causes browning along the stripe edges. Sun: Indirect

Medium to bright indirect light is ideal. An east-facing window works best. The white stripes stay crisp and bold in good indirect light. Direct sun bleaches the white areas and scorches the dark leaf surface.

Light: Medium to bright indirect

A spot near an east-facing window works well year-round in Canadian homes. From October to February when daylight shortens, keep it as close to the brightest indirect light as possible. Very low light causes the stripes to look duller.

Water: Keep moist, filtered water only

Water when the top inch of soil is slightly dry. Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy. Use filtered or distilled water every time. The white stripe areas show fluoride damage as browning patches before the leaf edges are affected.

Humidity: High

Needs humidity above 60 percent. The dry forced-air heating in Ontario and Quebec homes from November onward causes browning along the white stripe edges. A humidifier running nearby from November to March makes a visible difference.
