About This Plant

Dracaena Bicolor is in the Dracaena family and is native to tropical Africa. The leaves grow in a rosette or crown at the top of an upright stem that becomes woody over time, giving the plant a palm-like or dragon tree character.

The two-tone red-bordered leaves make it a stand-out. The red-purple borders running along both edges of every leaf give the plant a consistent and striking colour accent that distinguishes it from fully green Dracaenas. In good indirect light the border colour is deepest and most vivid.

Keep it away from pets and children. The ASPCA confirms Dracaena spp. is toxic to cats and dogs. The plant contains saponins that cause vomiting, excessive drooling, weakness, and loss of appetite. In cats, ingestion can also cause dilated pupils. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.

It handles low light and dry air better than most large tropical plants. Dracaena Bicolor is widely considered one of the easiest of the Dracaena family to keep in winter. It tolerates low light, dry forced-air heated air, and infrequent watering better than most alternatives of this size.

Winter Slowdown

Growth stops almost entirely from November onward. Reduce watering to once every two to three weeks. Keep temperatures above 15 degrees C, away from cold glass and heating vents. The two-tone leaf colour remains stable through winter. No fertilizer until spring.
