Common Questions
How often should I water the Dracaena Bicolor?
Water when the top inch of soil is dry, roughly every ten to fourteen days in spring and summer and every two to three weeks in a Canadian winter. Dracaenas are drought tolerant and are killed far more often by overwatering than by drought. Our indoor plant watering guide shows how to check correctly.
What light does it need in a Canadian home?
Low to bright indirect light. This is one of the more light-flexible Dracaenas and can handle north-facing rooms and dim corners while still growing. Brighter light means more vivid red borders. Read our guide to light requirements for indoor plants to find the right spot.
Is it toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes. The ASPCA confirms Dracaena spp. is toxic to cats and dogs. Saponins cause vomiting, drooling, weakness, and loss of appetite. In cats, ingestion can also cause dilated pupils. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
Why are the leaf tips turning brown?
Brown leaf tips on Dracaena are almost always caused by fluoride in tap water or very dry air. Use filtered or overnight-rested tap water. Keep it away from heating vents. Some tip browning is normal on older leaves and is not a sign of serious problems.
Will it survive a Canadian winter indoors?
Yes, easily. This is one of the best large plants for Canadian winter conditions. Keep above 15 degrees C, reduce watering, and keep it in any available light. Read our tips on keeping plants alive in winter for more.
