About This Plant

Hoya Macrophylla is native to the forests of Southeast Asia and Borneo. It produces broad, oval, deeply textured leaves that can reach 10 to 15 cm long, with pale cream or yellow-green veining running across the dark green surface.

The large textured leaves look more like a foliage plant. Most Hoyas have small to medium oval leaves without notable venation. Macrophylla produces large leaves with a strongly three-dimensional lattice of pale veins that makes each leaf look embossed and detailed.

Safe for cats and dogs. The ASPCA confirms Hoya spp. is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Macrophylla is pet-safe. The Hoya Australis is another pet-safe Hoya with plain deep green leaves that grows more vigorously and blooms more readily.

Larger leaves mean more visual impact. The broad surface area of each Macrophylla leaf collects dust faster than small-leaved Hoyas. Dust dulls the deep green colour. Wiping the large leaves with a damp cloth monthly keeps the plant absorbing maximum available light.

Winter Slowdown

Growth slows or stops from November onward. Reduce watering to every three to four weeks. Keep above 15 degrees C and in your brightest east-facing window. The large leaves make the plant more visually responsive to winter light changes.

Common Questions

The pale venation pattern seems to be fading. What causes this?

Fading venation contrast is almost always caused by dust accumulation on the large leaf surface, which creates a uniform grey film that masks the colour difference between the dark green and the pale veins. Wipe each leaf with a soft damp cloth and the venation contrast will return immediately. Insufficient light can also cause the overall leaf colour to lighten, which reduces venation contrast.

Why are the large leaves yellowing?

Large leaf yellowing on Macrophylla is most commonly caused by overwatering. The bigger root system rots faster than small-pot Hoyas when kept consistently wet. Let the top two inches of soil dry completely between waterings. If yellowing is on the oldest lower leaves only, this is normal natural shedding.

How fast does it grow compared to other Hoyas?

Macrophylla grows at a moderate pace, faster than collector varieties like Krohniana but slower than Pubicalyx or Australis. Because the leaves are large, each new leaf represents a significant visual addition to the plant even if fewer leaves are produced per month than on a small-leaved Hoya.

Does it need a climbing support?

Macrophylla climbs naturally using aerial roots that form along the stems. A moss pole or bamboo stake works well. Without a support it trails, which also looks attractive from a hanging basket or high shelf. Training it up a moss pole produces larger leaves because the plant is growing in its natural climbing orientation.

A spot near an east-facing window works year-round. From October to February in Canada, keep it in the brightest available spot. The large leaves make light reduction more visible than on small-leaved Hoyas.

Water: When top 1-2 inches are dry

Water when the top two inches of soil feel completely dry. Every ten to fourteen days in spring and summer, every three to four weeks in Canadian winter. The larger root system needs thorough watering followed by complete drainage.

Humidity: Low to moderate

Handles average Canadian indoor air well. The large waxy leaves store moisture effectively. A pebble tray helps from November to March.
