About This Plant

Hoya Krimson Queen (Hoya carnosa Krimson Queen) is a variegated cultivar of Hoya carnosa, the classic wax plant native to East and Southeast Asia. Young leaves emerge in vivid pink or deep red-pink before the cream sections mature and the pink fades.

New leaves arrive pink and the plant is always showing multiple stages at once. The most photographed moment in a Krimson Queen is the emergence of a new leaf cluster with vivid pink and magenta tones that slowly fade over days to cream.

Safe for cats and dogs. The ASPCA confirms Hoya spp. is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Krimson Queen is pet-safe. The Hoya Australis is another pet-safe Hoya that blooms more readily and grows faster if a simpler low-maintenance Hoya is preferred.

The cream variegation needs bright light to stay vivid. The cream and white edge sections contain little chlorophyll and burn faster in direct sun than the green centre of the leaf. It needs bright indirect light rather than direct sun.

Common Questions

Why is the new growth pink and will it stay that colour?

The vivid pink on new Krimson Queen leaves is caused by anthocyanin pigments in young leaf tissue. As each leaf matures and the waxy surface hardens, the pink fades and the variegation settles into its permanent cream and green pattern. The pink phase lasts one to three weeks per leaf. More bright indirect light produces a more vivid pink phase on each new leaf.

The new leaves are coming in all-green without any cream. What is happening?

Mostly-green new growth means the plant is not getting enough bright indirect light to maintain the variegation. The plant produces more chlorophyll in lower light, which means more green and less cream. Move it to a brighter east-facing window immediately. Existing cream-edged leaves will not revert but new leaves will continue to arrive greener until the light improves.

Can I put it in direct sun to encourage more pink on new leaves?

Avoid harsh direct sun. The cream and white sections of the leaf burn significantly faster than the green centre. While bright indirect morning light from an east-facing window encourages vivid pink new growth, direct afternoon sun scorches the cream edges before the plant benefits from the extra light. An east-facing window giving two to three hours of gentle morning light is the right balance.

Water when the top one to two inches of soil are completely dry. Every ten to fourteen days in spring and summer, every three to four weeks in Canadian winter. The thick waxy leaves store water well. Never leave in standing water.
