Common Questions
Why is the new growth pink and why does it fade to cream?
The pink flush on new Hoya Hindu Rope Variegata growth is caused by anthocyanin pigments in young leaf tissue that is still developing. As the leaf hardens and matures, the anthocyanins break down and the leaf settles into its permanent cream and green variegation. The intensity of the pink phase varies with light levels: more bright indirect light produces more vivid pink on new growth.
The new leaves are coming in green rather than cream. What is happening?
All-green new growth means the plant is not getting enough bright indirect light to maintain the variegation. In lower light the plant reverts toward producing more chlorophyll, which means more green and less cream. Move it to a brighter east-facing window immediately. The existing cream-edged leaves will not revert but new leaves will come in greener and greener in inadequate light.
Is Hoya Hindu Rope Variegata safe for cats and dogs?
Yes. The ASPCA confirms Hoya spp. is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Safe for homes with pets and small children.
How much slower does the Variegata grow compared to the plain Hindu Rope?
Significantly slower. The cream and pink sections contain less chlorophyll and produce energy at a much lower rate than fully green leaves. Where the plain Hindu Rope might add 10 to 20 cm of vine per growing season in good light, the Variegata may add 5 to 10 cm. A well-established trailing Variegata represents many years of careful growth and is correspondingly more valuable as a plant.
Can I get it to flower?
Yes, but it requires more patience than the plain Hindu Rope because of the slower growth rate. The plant needs to be mature with established vine sections before peduncles form. Keep it in the brightest east-facing indirect light available, never cut old flower stalks, and keep it slightly root-bound. Flowering is possible once the plant has settled into its position for two or more years.
