About This Plant

Hoya Krohniana is native to the Philippines and surrounding Southeast Asian islands. It produces miniature, perfectly heart-shaped, thick, waxy leaves.They rarely exceed 2 to 3 cm in width, each decorated with irregular silver splashing across a dark green surface.

The combination of miniature size and heart-shaped leaves makes it unique. Most Hoyas have oval or lance-shaped leaves of moderate to large size. Krohniana produces leaves so small and heart-shaped that the vine looks like a string of tiny hearts.

Safe for cats and dogs. The ASPCA confirms Hoya spp. is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Krohniana is pet-safe. The Hoya Krohniana Silver is the same plant with leaves that are predominantly silver rather than green with silver splashing, for a more dramatic effect.

Its small size makes it perfect for terrariums, and small shelves. Most Hoyas need significant space as they vine out. Krohniana stays compact for much longer and suits a small pot, the front of a hanging basket, or a large open terrarium.

Winter Slowdown

Growth slows or stops from November onward. Reduce watering to every three to four weeks. Keep above 15 degrees C and in your brightest east-facing window. Do not remove any old flower stalks through winter.

Pests

Mealybugs are the primary pest and the hardest to detect because the tiny leaves and fine wiry stems make thorough inspection difficult. Treat immediately and isolate from other Hoyas.

Common Questions

How is this different from Hoya Krohniana Silver?

Both are the same species but different cultivars. Hoya Krohniana has dark green leaves with silver splashing, where green is the dominant colour. Hoya Krohniana Silver has leaves that are predominantly silver-white with less visible green. The Silver cultivar grows even more slowly because more of the leaf is silver and produces less energy from photosynthesis.

Can it grow in a terrarium?

Yes, and it is one of the better Hoyas for a large, semi-open terrarium. The miniature leaf size and slow trailing habit suit the scale of a terrarium. The ambient humidity inside a terrarium suits Krohniana well. Use an open-top or ventilated terrarium rather than a fully sealed one, as Hoyas need air circulation to prevent stem rot.

Is Hoya Krohniana safe for cats and dogs?

Yes. The ASPCA confirms Hoya spp. is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Safe for homes with pets and small children.

The silver splashing on my leaves is fading. What causes this?

Fading silver can be caused by insufficient bright indirect light. The silver markings are most vivid in good light. In lower light new leaves may arrive with less visible silver. Move it to a brighter east-facing window. Also check that the leaves are clean, as dust on the small waxy surface dulls the silver appearance.

Will it flower and what do the flowers look like?

Yes, with patience and maturity. Krohniana produces small, rounded clusters of star-shaped flowers with a sweet honey-like fragrance. The flowers are proportionally small like the leaves. Keep the plant in bright indirect light, leave all old flower stalks intact, and wait for the vine to mature. Never cut a peduncle after flowering, it is the permanent reblooming point for future clusters.

How to take care of Hoya Krohniana

Good to Know

Sun: Indirect

Bright indirect light. An east-facing window works well. The silver splashing is most vivid in good indirect light. Direct sun scorches the tiny waxy leaves quickly.

Light: Medium to bright indirect

A spot near an east-facing window works year-round. From October to February in Canada, the tiny leaves are more sensitive to very low winter light than larger-leaved Hoyas.

Water: When top 1-2 inches are dry

Water when the top inch of soil is completely dry. Every ten to fourteen days in spring and summer, every three to four weeks in Canadian winter. Do not overwater as the small pot size means roots sit in moisture for longer than a larger pot.

Humidity: Low to moderate

Handles average Canadian indoor air reasonably but the tiny leaves dry slightly faster than large waxy Hoya leaves. A pebble tray nearby helps from November to March.
