About This Plant

Hoya Pubicalyx Silver Splash is a cultivated variety of Hoya pubicalyx native to the Philippines. The Silver Splash cultivar has some leaves that appear more silver than green. It grows faster than most Hoyas, and produces the same deeply coloured dark pink to burgundy flower clusters.

The silver coverage makes it a standout. The standard Pubicalyx silver speckles require close inspection. The Silver Splash has large, bold silver areas that are clearly visible from across a room, giving the vine a different visual character while keeping the vigorous growth.

Safe for cats and dogs. The ASPCA confirms Hoya spp. is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Silver Splash is pet-safe. The Hoya Australis is another fast-growing, reliable-blooming pet-safe Hoya with plain deep green leaves.

It retains the fast growth and blooming of the standard Pubicalyx. The Silver Splash Pubicalyx does not suffer significantly from its heavy silver marking. It grows faster than collector Hoyas and is likely to bloom in its first or second year than a variegated Hoya.

Winter Slowdown

Growth slows or stops from November onward. Reduce watering to every three to four weeks. Keep above 15 degrees C and in your brightest east-facing window. Do not remove any old flower stalks through winter.

Dull silver patches are almost always caused by dust on the waxy leaf surface. The silver appears as a shimmering reflection when the leaf is clean. Dust creates a grey film that kills the shimmering quality. Wipe each leaf with a soft, barely damp cloth and the silver will appear to brighten immediately.

Will it flower as readily as the standard Pubicalyx?

Yes. The Silver Splash blooms at roughly the same rate as the standard Pubicalyx. Follow the same approach: bright indirect light, established vine with mature sections, and never cut old flower stalks. The peduncles produce the same dark-coloured flower clusters repeatedly for the life of the plant.

A spot near an east-facing window year-round. From October to February, the heavy silver coverage makes this plant slightly more light-sensitive than the plain Pubicalyx. Keep it in the brightest available indirect spot.
