About This Plant

Hoya Arctic is a collector variety of Hoya, native to tropical and subtropical Asia. It produces thick, waxy, succulent-textured leaves in deep green with dramatic irregular splashes. Like all Hoyas, the leaves are firm and store water, making the plant drought-tolerant.

The icy silver-white leaf splashing on dark green looks pretty. Many variegated Hoyas have subtle cream edges or speckled patterns. The Arctic has bold, irregular silver-white patches that can cover a third to half of some leaf surfaces, giving the plant a striking, almost snow-covered character.

Safe for cats and dogs. The ASPCA confirms Hoya spp. is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Hoya Arctic is pet-safe. The Hoya Australis is another confirmed pet-safe Hoya with plain waxy leaves and reliable fragrant blooms for comparison.

The thick waxy leaves store water, making it drought-tolerant. This means it handles the dry forced-air heating of homes far better than most tropical trailing plants and tolerates missed waterings without the immediate wilting that thinner-leaved plants show.

Winter Slowdown

Growth slows or stops from November onward. Reduce watering to every three to four weeks. Keep temperatures above 15 degrees C and in bright indirect light. Avoid moving it or changing its environment through winter. No fertilizer until spring.

Will the silver-white variegation stay vivid or fade to green?

The silver variegation stays most vivid in bright indirect light. In lower light the white areas can gradually become more pale green over time as the plant produces leaves with less visible variegation. Keep it in your brightest east-facing window year-round. New leaves that arrive more silver than green are a sign the light level is right.

Hoya Arctic is slower-growing and rarer than standard Hoya varieties, which is typical of heavily variegated plants. Because the silver-white sections contain less chlorophyll, the plant produces energy more slowly and grows at a fraction of the pace of a plain-leaved Hoya. Will it ever produce Hoya flowers?
