All the Details You Need to Know

The Story Behind This Plant

Part of the diverse Hoya carnosa family, the Arctic cultivar is native to East Asia and Australia. It is often called the Wax Plant because of its leathery, waxy leaves and unique flowers. It is cherished by collectors for being slightly more compact and orderly in its growth habit compared to other carnosa varieties, while still providing that iconic high-contrast variegation that makes it feel like a living piece of art.

How to Keep It Happy

Hoya Arctic is low-maintenance but thrives best when its tropical roots are respected. Here are the secrets to lush growth:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate medium light, but bright light is essential for it to produce flowers and maintain its white variegation. Avoid direct, scorching sun.
  • Water: Allow the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings. Use the "taco test"—if the leaves feel slightly flexible or soft, it is time for a drink. If they are firm, let it be.
  • Humidity: Loves moderate to high humidity but adapts well to average home conditions. If your air is very dry in the winter, placing it near a humidifier will help it thrive.
  • Soil: Use a very chunky, well-draining mix. A blend of orchid bark, perlite, and potting soil is perfect to keep the roots oxygenated.
  • Temperature: Prefers a warm environment (18°C–27°C). Protect it from cold drafts and frosty windows during the Canadian winter.
  • Feeding: Use a balanced liquid fertilizer at half-strength once a month during the spring and summer growing season.
What to Do About Pests

Hoyas are generally hardy, but they can occasionally attract pests if the air is stagnant or the soil is too wet. Regular inspection is your best defense.

  • Mealybugs: The most common Hoya pest. Look for white, cottony masses in the leaf joints. Our Guide
  • Root Rot: Usually caused by overwatering or soil that is too heavy. Ensure your pot has drainage and you are using a chunky mix.
  • Aphids: Occasionally appear on the sweet, sticky nectar of new blooms. A gentle rinse with water usually does the trick.

Sun: Direct - Indirect

Hoya Arctic prefers medium to bright light conditions. While it can tolerate lower light, vibrant colors and healthy growth are more likely in a bright space, especially near an east or west-facing window.

Light: Medium - Bright

They enjoy some direct sun, but they'll also do well in bright, indirect light. It is best to place your Hoya Arctic where it receives soft morning sunlight or filtered afternoon rays, followed by bright, indirect light for the rest of the day.

Water: When Mostly dry

Allow the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings. Hoya Arctic stores water in its succulent-like leaves, so it’s drought-tolerant and doesn't like wet feet. Overwatering is one of the fastest ways to harm it.

Humidity: Any

This plant is adaptable and does fine in average household humidity. However, it’ll appreciate a little boost in humidity, especially during the winter when indoor air gets drier. A pebble tray or occasional misting can help.

Pet Friendly: Caution

Hoya Arctic is considered mildly toxic if ingested, so it is best to keep it out of reach of curious pets.

Pro Tip

Hoya Arctic will reward you with beautiful reddish leaves and fragrant blooms when grown in bright light and snug pots. Avoid repotting too often—these plants prefer to be slightly root-bound to thrive and flower.
