About This Plant

Hoya Wayetii is native to the Philippines. It produces narrow, strap-like, waxy leaves with deep green centres and dark red-pink to maroon margins. It grows as a moderately paced trailing or vining plant.

The dark red-pink leaf margins are a distinctive feature in the Hoya genus. Most Hoyas have uniform-coloured leaves or silver variegation. Wayetii has a defined, consistent dark red-pink margin along the entire edge of every leaf, creating a two-tone green-and-red character.

Safe for cats and dogs. The ASPCA confirms Hoya spp. is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Wayetii is pet-safe. The Hoya Pubicalyx is another pet-safe Hoya that grows faster and blooms more reliably if flowering is the priority.

The margin colour intensity tells you whether the light level is right. Deep, rich maroon-red margins mean the light is at the right level. Faded, greenish margins on what were previously red-edged leaves mean the plant needs more light.

Winter Slowdown

The red-pink margins fade toward dark green as light levels drop from October onward. This is a normal response to reduced light intensity and is reversible when light returns in spring. Keep it in your brightest east-facing window through winter to slow the margin fading.

Common Questions

Why are the red margins fading to dark green?

Margin fading is caused by insufficient bright indirect light. The red-pink pigments in the margins are strongest in good light conditions. Move the plant to a brighter east-facing window. The margins on existing leaves will gradually return to red-pink as light improves and new leaves will arrive with more vivid margins.

How is Hoya Wayetii different from Hoya Rosita?

Both have narrow strap-like leaves and warm leaf colouring, but the source of colour is different. Wayetii has persistent dark red-pink margins that run along the leaf edges throughout the leaf life. Rosita has a bronze-pink new growth flush that fades as the leaf matures to plain dark green. Wayetii shows its colour permanently on leaf edges; Rosita shows its colour only on young leaves.

Can I use the margin colour to decide whether to fertilize?

The margin colour is a reliable light indicator but not a reliable fertilizer indicator. If the margins are fading, address the light first. Fertilizing a plant in inadequate light adds nutrients the plant cannot use efficiently and does not restore the margin colour.

Does it produce flowers and what do they look like?

Yes. Hoya Wayetii produces small rounded clusters of waxy star flowers consistent with the Hoya genus. The flower colour tends toward pink and cream. Like all Hoyas, it blooms from permanent peduncles that must never be cut. In bright indirect light with established vine sections it can bloom reliably once mature.

Bright indirect light is essential for keeping the red-pink margins vivid. An east-facing window is ideal. In lower light the margins fade to dark green.

Light: Medium to bright indirect

A spot near an east-facing window works year-round. From October to February, the degree of margin fading tells you how much light the current winter position is providing.

Water: When top 1-2 inches are dry

Water when the top one to two inches of soil feel completely dry. Every ten to fourteen days in spring and summer, every three to four weeks in Canadian winter. The waxy leaves handle drought well.

Humidity: Low to moderate
