How to Care for Your Orchid

Skip the daily pour. Soak the bottom quarter of the pot in room-temperature water for about 15 minutes once a week, then let it drain fully. The bark needs time to actually absorb water, and top-pouring just runs straight through. In Canadian winters, drop to once every 10 to 14 days. Overwatering is the number one killer of orchids in indoor homes. For a step-by-step routine, see our orchid care checklist.

How to Fix Common Orchid & Exotic Plant Problems?

Silvery roots just mean the plant is thirsty. Soak the pot for 15 minutes and watch them turn bright green within an hour. That colour shift is the easiest 'needs water' cue any houseplant gives you.

Black or mushy roots mean overwatering and rot. Slide the plant out, trim the dead roots with clean scissors, and repot into fresh chunky bark. Go lighter on water for the next few weeks until you see fresh root tips.

Bud drop almost always points to one of three culprits. Cold drafts, a heating vent blowing on the plant, or ripening fruit nearby. Move the plant, and the next round of buds usually opens just fine.

Those fluffy white clusters are mealybugs. Dab them with a cotton swab dipped in 70% isopropyl alcohol. Hard brown bumps are scale, wipe those down with neem oil. Check the undersides of leaves every week so you catch pests early.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mini Phalaenopsis, Piccola, and Artistica are the most forgiving for first-time owners. They handle lower light, recover from missed waterings, and rebloom reliably with very little fuss. Start with any of these and you'll build confidence fast.

Once a week in spring and summer, every 10 to 14 days in winter. Soak the pot from below for 15 minutes, let it drain fully, and never leave it sitting in standing water. When the roots look silvery, it's time. When they're plump and bright green, wait.

True orchids in this collection, including Phalaenopsis, Cymbidium, and Dendrobium, are listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs by the ASPCA. Even so, chewed leaves can cause mild stomach upset, so it's still smart to place plants out of reach of curious pets.

Healthy leaves but no flowers usually means the plant needs a nudge. Move it to a spot with brighter indirect light, then let the room cool by a few degrees at night for two to three weeks. That temperature drop is what triggers a new flower spike.

Check for firm green leaves, plump roots, and clear care instructions. Avoid sellers whose photos show yellow leaves, wrinkled spikes, or signs of pests. Every MyGreenScape orchid ships with a care card, winter-safe packaging, and our 30-day happy plant guarantee. Need help later? See our orchid plant care guide any time.
