Common Questions
How often should I water the Alocasia Lukiwan?
Water when the top inch of soil is mostly dry. In spring and summer, roughly every seven to ten days. In a Canadian winter, cut back to every two weeks. The Lukiwan prefers consistently moist soil but will rot quickly in soggy conditions. Our indoor plant watering guide shows exactly how to check before watering.
What light does it need in a Canadian home?
Bright indirect light from an east- or north-facing window works best. Avoid direct sun which scorches the narrow leaf tips. In a Canadian home from October to February, keep it as close to the brightest window as possible. Read our guide to light requirements for indoor plants to find the right spot.
Is the Alocasia Lukiwan toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes. The ASPCA confirms Alocasia spp. is toxic to cats and dogs. The leaves contain insoluble calcium oxalates, which cause mouth pain, drooling, swelling, and vomiting if chewed. Keep it on a high shelf that pets and small children cannot reach.
Why does it only have a few leaves at a time?
This is normal for many Alocasias. As a new leaf unfurls, the plant often drops an older leaf to redirect its energy. To encourage more leaves, ensure it has consistent bright indirect light, high humidity above 60 percent, and warmth above 18°C. A root-bound plant may also stall, check if it needs a slightly larger pot.
Will it survive a Canadian winter indoors?
Yes, but it needs attention. Keep it above 18°C, away from cold glass and drafts. Boost humidity with a humidifier, as the narrow leaves show dry air stress quickly. Growth slows from November to February but the plant stays alive. Our tips on keeping plants alive in winter cover what to watch for.
