About This Plant

Anthurium Crystallinum Turtle is a collector variety of Anthurium crystallinum, native to the rainforests of Central and South America. Its name comes from the way these bright veins glitter like crystals against the matte dark green.

The silver veining is unlike most houseplants. The shimmering contrast between the matte velvety surface and the bright raised veins creates a three-dimensional look that photographs exceptionally well and reads dramatically in any light.

Keep it away from pets and children. The ASPCA confirms Anthurium spp. is toxic to cats and dogs. The leaves contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that cause mouth pain, drooling, swelling, and vomiting if chewed. Keep it on a high shelf or in a room pets cannot reach.

It needs a chunky aroid mix, not standard potting soil. This plant grows semi-epiphytically in the wild and needs excellent drainage and airflow around its roots. A blend of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir keeps the roots healthy.

Winter Slowdown

The Crystallinum is one of the most cold-sensitive Anthuriums. If indoor temperatures drop below 18°C at night it can drop all of its leaves not just slow down. This is documented specifically for the velvet-leaf Anthurium group. Growth pauses from November onward in Canadian homes due to low light, and new leaves may not emerge until March..

Toxicity

Toxic to cats and dogs, confirmed by the ASPCA (Anthurium spp.). The leaves and sap contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. On contact with the mouth, the crystals cause immediate intense burning and swelling of the lips, tongue, and throat. Skin contact with the sap can also cause irritation and dermatitis. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children, and wash hands after handling.

Pests

Check the undersides of leaves for spider mites each time you water. The velvety leaf surface can hide early infestations. Also watch for mealybugs at the leaf base and on the aerial roots. Dry heated air from November onward makes this plant more vulnerable.

Other Plants You Might Like

Not sure this is the right fit? Here are three other plants our Canadian customers love. All ship across Canada and thrive in Canadian homes.

Anthurium Hookeri Variegata. Same family, variegated.

For another rare collector Anthurium with a completely different look, the Anthurium Hookeri Variegata has striking cream and green variegated leaves in a bolder, upright form.

Anthurium Jenmanii Gold. Structural and golden.

For a larger Anthurium with strong structural leaves and a golden-green tone, the Anthurium Jenmanii Gold makes a bold statement on a plant stand in a bright Canadian room.

Alocasia Silver Dragon. Velvety and textured.

For a compact collector plant with a different kind of silver veining on a textured surface, the Alocasia Silver Dragon has the same scale-like velvety appeal in a smaller form.

Common Questions

How often should I water the Anthurium Crystallinum Turtle?

Water when the top half of the aroid mix feels dry. In spring and summer that is roughly every seven to ten days. In a Canadian winter, cut back to every two weeks or more. This plant is very sensitive to overwatering. Our indoor plant watering guide shows exactly how to check moisture before watering.

What light does it need in a Canadian home?

Bright indirect light is best. A spot near an east-facing window works well year-round. The brighter the indirect light, the larger and more velvety the leaves grow. Avoid direct afternoon sun which scorches the dark velvety surface. Read our guide to light requirements for indoor plants to find the right spot.

Is the Anthurium Crystallinum Turtle toxic to cats and dogs?

Yes. The ASPCA confirms Anthurium spp. is toxic to cats and dogs. The leaves contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which cause mouth pain, drooling, swelling, and vomiting if chewed. Keep it on a high shelf that pets and small children cannot reach.

Why are the leaf edges turning brown?

Brown edges almost always mean the air is too dry. The forced-air heating in Ontario and Quebec homes drops indoor humidity significantly in winter, which this plant feels quickly. Move it away from heating vents, run a humidifier nearby, and try using filtered or overnight-rested tap water. Our tips on keeping plants alive in winter cover humidity management in more detail.

Why does it grow so slowly?

This is normal. Anthurium Crystallinum Turtle is a naturally slow grower, especially indoors in Canada where light levels are lower than its native rainforest. It typically produces one new leaf at a time, and each leaf takes several weeks to fully unfurl. Once you find the right balance of bright indirect light, humidity, and a chunky aroid mix, growth becomes more consistent.

How to Take Care of Anthurium Crystallinum Turtle

Good to Know

Sun: Indirect

Bright indirect light keeps the velvety surface deep green and the silver veins vivid. A spot near an east-facing window is ideal. Avoid direct afternoon sun which scorches the matte leaf surface and dulls the silver sheen.

Light: Medium to bright indirect

A spot near an east-facing window works well year-round in a Canadian home. The brighter the indirect light, the larger and more dramatic the leaves grow. From October to February, keep it as close to the brightest window as possible.

Water: When top half of mix is dry

Water thoroughly until it drains, then wait until the top half of the aroid mix feels dry. In a Canadian winter, every two weeks or less. Never leave it sitting in water. Root rot sets in quickly in dense or wet soil.

Humidity: High

Needs humidity above 60 percent to produce large, velvety leaves. The dry forced-air heating in Ontario and Quebec homes in winter is the most common cause of crispy edges. A humidifier running nearby from November to March makes a significant difference.

Pet Friendly: No

Toxic to cats and dogs, confirmed by the ASPCA. Contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Keep it somewhere pets and small children cannot reach.

Pro Tip

This plant rewards a stable environment. Once you find a warm, bright spot away from cold windows and heating vents, keep it there. Avoid moving it around. Consistent light, consistent humidity, and a chunky aroid mix produce steadier growth and larger leaves over time in Canadian homes.
