Common Questions
How often should I water the Begonia Maculata?
Water when the top one to two inches of soil feel dry. In spring and summer that is roughly every seven to ten days. In a Canadian winter, every ten to fourteen days. Never let it sit in water and avoid getting the leaves wet. Our indoor plant watering guide shows how to check soil moisture correctly.
What light does it need to keep the spots vivid and bloom?
Bright indirect light is ideal. An east-facing window works best. The white spots stay vivid in any indirect light but the plant flowers most reliably with brighter conditions. Avoid direct afternoon sun which scorches the spotted leaves. Read our guide to light requirements for indoor plants to find the right spot.
Is the Begonia Maculata toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes. The ASPCA confirms Begonia spp. is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses. The plant contains soluble calcium oxalates, most concentrated in the roots, which cause vomiting, salivation, and drooling. Keep it on a high shelf that pets and small children cannot reach.
Why are leaves developing spots or white powder?
White powder or discoloured patches on the leaves usually indicate powdery mildew, a common fungal issue with begonias. It is triggered by poor air circulation and moisture on the leaves. Never mist this plant. Improve airflow around it and remove affected leaves. Keep watering to the soil only.
Will it survive a Canadian winter indoors?
Yes. Keep it above 18°C, away from cold glass and heating vents. Growth slows from November through February and flowering may stop. Keep the soil slightly drier than in summer but do not let it dry out completely. Read our tips on keeping plants alive in winter for more.
