About This Plant

Begonia Maculata, also called the Polka Dot Begonia or Wightii Begonia, is a cane-stemmed begonia native to the tropical Atlantic forests of Brazil. It grows upright on bamboo-like cane stems with large, elongated angel-wing-shaped leaves in deep green, covered in irregular bright white spots, and with a rich burgundy-red underside.

The white polka dots on a dark green leaf are hard to ignore. The bold, irregular white spots scattered across each large angel-wing leaf create a strong, graphic pattern that looks deliberately designed. The burgundy underside adds a second layer of colour visible from below.

Keep it away from pets and children. The ASPCA confirms Begonia spp. is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses. The plant contains soluble calcium oxalates, most concentrated in the roots, which cause vomiting, salivation, and drooling if ingested. Keep it on a high shelf or in a room pets cannot reach.

It blooms reliably with enough bright light. In good indirect light the Begonia Maculata produces small clusters of white or pale pink flowers on arching stems. More light means more flowers.
