Common Questions
How often should I water the Chlorophytum Mandarin?
Water when the top half of the soil feels dry. In spring and summer every seven to ten days. In a Canadian winter, every ten to fourteen days. Spider plants store water in their thick roots and handle missed waterings without drama. Our indoor plant watering guide shows how to check correctly.
Why are the orange stems fading to green?
The orange stem colour is most vivid in medium to bright indirect light. In lower light the orange fades toward green or yellow-green. Move it closer to an east-facing window. This is most noticeable in Canadian homes from October to February when light levels are lowest. Read our guide to light requirements for indoor plants to find the right spot.
Is the Chlorophytum Mandarin safe for cats and dogs?
Yes. The ASPCA confirms Chlorophytum comosum is non-toxic to cats and dogs. It is confirmed pet-safe. Note that cats are frequently attracted to spider plants and may chew on the leaves and runners. This is not dangerous but eating large amounts can cause mild stomach upset.
How do I get more plants from the runners?
When the runners produce small plantlets with visible roots, cut the runner and pot the plantlet into moist soil. It will root quickly and grow into a full plant. Propagating spider plant babies is one of the easiest ways to multiply houseplants and the orange stems on the Mandarin variety carry through to the new plants.
Will it survive a Canadian winter indoors?
Yes, easily. Spider plants are among the most winter-tolerant houseplants available. The Mandarin handles lower light, dry air, and cooler temperatures down to about 10°C without significant stress. Just reduce watering and keep it in any available light. Read our tips on keeping plants alive in winter for more.
