About This Plant

Coffee Plant (Coffea arabica) is native to the highland forests of Ethiopia. Indoors it produces upright, bushy growth with large, exceptionally glossy, dark green leaves that have slightly ruffled or wavy edges, giving each leaf a polished, almost lacquered appearance.

The leaves are genuinely one of the glossiest of any common houseplant. The highly reflective surface of each Coffea arabica leaf is distinctive and makes the plant look polished and vibrant from across a room.

Keep it away from pets. The ASPCA confirms Coffea arabica is toxic to cats and dogs. The leaves, berries, and in particular the coffee beans contain caffeine and other xanthine compounds that cause rapid heart rate, tremors, seizures, and vomiting if ingested. The beans are significantly more dangerous than the foliage. Keep it in a room that pets cannot access.

It droops dramatically when thirsty and recovers just as fast. The Coffee Plant is one of the clearest communicators among houseplants. When it needs water, the leaves go visibly limp. Water it promptly and within an hour or two it stands back up as if nothing happened.

Winter Slowdown

Growth slows from November onward as Canadian light levels drop below the bright conditions this plant prefers. The leaves may lose some of their high-gloss intensity in lower light. Keep it in your brightest south- or east-facing window, water less frequently, and keep temperatures between 18 and 24°C.

Coffee plants are susceptible to mealybugs, which appear as white cottony clusters at the base of leaves and in stem joints. Also watch for scale insects on the stems and the undersides of the glossy leaves.

How often should I water the Coffee Plant?

Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. In spring and summer that is roughly every five to seven days. In a Canadian winter, every seven to ten days. Will my Coffee Plant actually produce coffee beans?

Yes, with patience. After 3 to 4 years of good care in a bright spot, the plant can produce fragrant jasmine-like white flowers. The flowers give way to green coffee cherries that ripen to red over several months. Each cherry contains two actual arabica beans. Indoors you will need to hand-pollinate the flowers using a small paintbrush. The yield is small but real.
