About This Plant

Hoya Cumingiana is a compact hoya with small, thick leaves packed close together on upright stems. Those leaves store water, so the plant can wait a week or two between waterings. In the wild it grows on rocks and other plants in the Philippines, Borneo and Java, which is why it needs a chunky mix that drains fast instead of heavy potting soil.

A missed watering won't hurt it. Its thick leaves hold a water supply, and the mix should dry out fully before you water again. If you head to the cottage for a long weekend or work long shifts, it will be fine until you get back. If you like plants that store water in their leaves, our jade plant stores water the same way.

Keep it out of reach of pets. The ASPCA does not list Hoya Cumingiana in its plant database, so its safety for cats and dogs is not confirmed. As a precaution, keep it on a high shelf or in a room your pets don't use, like a home office with the door closed.

It fits a small apartment window. Its leaves are only 3 to 5 cm long and grow close together, so it stays tidy on a windowsill or a small trellis. With bright light it can bloom in spring and summer. For another small-leaved plant that suits a condo shelf, see our String of Turtles with round, patterned leaves.

Winter Slowdown: less growth, less water

From late fall to early spring, growth slows and you may see few new leaves. This happens because rooms are cooler and days are shorter in Ontario and Quebec. Do not fertilize in winter, do not keep the mix wet, and keep the plant above 16°C (61°F), away from cold glass and drafty doors. When days get longer in spring, new growth picks up and you can go back to regular watering and feeding.

Other Plants You Might Like

Not sure this is the right fit? Here are three other plants our Canadian customers love. All ship across Canada and thrive in Canadian homes.

Hoya Australis Lisa. Same hoya family.

If you like the waxy leaves and let-it-dry watering of this plant, Hoya Australis Lisa has larger, variegated leaves with the same easy routine.

String of Hearts. Trails from a shelf.

If you want small leaves on a plant that trails down instead of growing up, String of Hearts hangs in long strands of heart-shaped leaves from a bookshelf or hanging pot.

Peperomia Tricolor. Compact and colourful.

If a tight windowsill is your main limit, Peperomia Tricolor stays small with thick, pink-edged leaves that also hold water between waterings.

Common Questions

How often should I water a Hoya Cumingiana?

Water when the mix is dry all the way down, which is often every 1 to 2 weeks in spring and summer. Soak it, let the extra water drain out, and never leave it sitting in a saucer of water. For more on reading when a plant is thirsty, see our guide to watering indoor plants.

How much light does Hoya Cumingiana need in a Canadian home?

It needs bright indirect light, and a few hours of gentle morning sun helps it flower. An east or west window works well. In a Canadian winter the sun is weaker, so keep it right beside the window instead of across the room.

When does Hoya Cumingiana flower and what do the flowers look like?

It flowers in spring and summer when it gets enough light. Each round cluster holds up to 20 small star-shaped flowers, greenish yellow with folded-back petals and a reddish brown centre. The flowers have a light, pleasant scent and last about a week.

How big does Hoya Cumingiana get?

The leaves stay small, about 3 to 5 cm long. Stems can reach about 1.5 m over time, and a small trellis or hoop keeps them neat in a pot.

Is Hoya Cumingiana toxic to cats and dogs?

Not confirmed. The ASPCA does not list Hoya Cumingiana, so there is no confirmed toxic compound and no confirmed safe rating for this exact plant. The ASPCA notes that eating any plant material can cause vomiting and stomach upset in cats and dogs. Keep it on a high shelf, a hanging planter, or in a room pets and small children can't reach.

Why is my Hoya Cumingiana dropping leaves in winter?

In a normal winter this plant slows down and keeps its leaves. Yellow or falling leaves usually point to soggy soil or cold, so check that the mix dries out between waterings. Move it away from cold window glass and doors that open to the outside, and keep it above 16°C (61°F).

Does Hoya Cumingiana need a humidifier in winter?

It handles average home humidity and grows best around 50 to 60%. Forced-air heating dries out indoor air in Ontario and Quebec winters. Grouping it with other plants or running a small humidifier in the room helps it keep growing.

What pests or safety issues should I know about?

Spider mites like dry air, and forced-air heating keeps the air dry all winter in Ontario and Quebec homes, so check the leaves and stems every time you water.

Mealybugs

Looks like: white, cottony clumps on stems and near flowers

Fix: Dab each clump with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol, then check again every few days.

Scale

Looks like: small brown bumps stuck to stems and the undersides of leaves

Fix: Scrape them off gently and wipe the area with insecticidal soap.

Aphids

Looks like: clusters of tiny green or black insects on new growth and flower buds

Fix: Rinse them off in the shower, then spray with insecticidal soap.

Spider mites

Looks like: fine webbing and tiny pale specks on the leaves

Fix: Wash the leaves with lukewarm water and raise the humidity around the plant.

Keep a new or infested plant away from your other plants for a few weeks, and wear gloves when you apply rubbing alcohol or insecticidal soap.

Good to Know

Sun: Bright - Indirect

Hoya Cumingiana grows best in medium to bright light. Brighter conditions can encourage healthier growth and flowering, while lower light may slow growth.

Light: Medium - Bright

Hoya Cumingiana enjoys bright, filtered light and can handle a few hours of gentle morning sun. Avoid strong direct afternoon sun, which can scorch its leaves.

Water: When Mostly dry

Allow the soil to dry out well between waterings. Water Hoya Cumingiana thoroughly once the top portion of the soil has dried, then let excess water drain completely.

Humidity: Medium to High

Hoya Cumingiana appreciates moderate to high humidity, although it can adapt to normal household conditions. Good airflow is important, especially in humid spaces.

Pet Friendly: Yes

Hoya Cumingiana is generally considered non toxic to cats and dogs. As with any houseplant, chewing large amounts of plant material can still cause mild stomach upset.

Pro Tip

Let the vines grow and avoid constantly moving the plant. Once Hoya Cumingiana settles into a bright spot, consistent light and careful watering can help encourage new growth and flowers.
