About This Plant

Hoya Krohniana Silver is a cultivar of Hoya krohniana native to the Philippines, distinguished by leaves that are predominantly silver-white. Each leaf is silver, so the plant grows slowly than the standard Krohniana.

Leaves that are entirely silver make the vine look like tiny metal hearts. The entire leaf surface reads as silver-white, with green being the minority colour. In bright indirect light the vine shimmers in a way unlike any other common houseplant.

Safe for cats and dogs. The ASPCA confirms Hoya spp. is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Krohniana Silver is pet-safe. The Hoya Arctic is another Hoya with bold silver-white leaf coverage in a different larger-leaved flat form.

The silver leaves mean this plant grows slowly than most Hoyas. Silver and white leaf sections contain almost no chlorophyll and produce energy very slowly. This slow pace is part of its rarity and makes an established plant more valuable over time.

Winter Slowdown

Growth slows or stops from November onward. Reduce watering to every three to four weeks. Keep above 15 degrees C and in your brightest east-facing window. Do not remove any old flower stalks through winter.

Why are the silver leaves important to keep clean?

Dust on the silver leaf surface dulls the shimmering quality that makes this plant distinctive. The thin wax layer on each tiny leaf makes dust removal more delicate than on larger plants. Use a soft, barely damp cloth or a gentle brush rather than rubbing. Clean silver leaves in good light are what make this plant worth having.

Why does it grow so slowly compared to other Hoyas?

The predominantly silver leaf surface contains very little chlorophyll, which converts light into energy for growth. A plant with mostly silver leaves produces a fraction of the energy that a fully green plant would produce, which directly limits its growth rate. This is characteristic of all heavily variegated plants and is not a sign of poor health.

New growth is coming in green with silver splashing rather than all silver. Is something wrong?

Not necessarily. New leaves sometimes emerge with more green before the silver becomes more prominent as the leaf matures. However, if new growth is consistently arriving with much more green than silver, the plant needs more bright indirect light. More light increases the silver intensity on new leaves.

Can I propagate it from cuttings?

Yes. Take a stem cutting with at least one node and one or two leaves. Allow the cut end to callous for an hour before placing in moist sphagnum moss in a warm, bright spot. Because the Silver cultivar grows so slowly, cuttings take longer to root than standard Hoyas. Expect four to ten weeks before roots are visible.

How to take care of Hoya Krohniana Silver

Sun: Indirect

Bright indirect light is essential. The predominantly silver leaves produce little energy even in good light. Direct sun burns the silver surface quickly. An east-facing window is ideal.

Light: Medium to bright indirect

The brightest east-facing indirect spot available year-round. From October to February in Canada, this plant needs the best available light more than any other Hoya in a collection, because its low chlorophyll content makes it least able to tolerate reduced winter light.

Water: When top 1-2 inches are dry

Water when the top inch of soil is completely dry. Every ten to fourteen days in spring and summer, every three to four weeks in Canadian winter. Use a smaller volume of water than for larger Hoyas given the small pot size.

Humidity: Low to moderate

Handles average Canadian indoor air. A pebble tray nearby from November to March helps. The tiny waxy leaves are slightly more vulnerable to dry air than large Hoya leaves.
