About This Plant

Lipstick Plant Black Pagoda (Aeschynanthus longicaulis) is a trailing epiphyte native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia. It grows long arching stems suited to a hanging basket or elevated shelf position in a Canadian home.

The dark marbled foliage makes it interesting even when not in bloom. The Black Pagoda is different because the dark olive-green and silver marbled upper surface paired with deep burgundy undersides provides year-round visual interest. The Lipstick Plant is the plain green-leaved companion with red flowers for a brighter, simpler alternative.

Safe for cats and dogs. The ASPCA confirms Aeschynanthus (Lipstick Plant) is non-toxic to cats and dogs. The Black Pagoda is pet-safe. The String of Pearls is another trailing plant but is toxic, making the Black Pagoda the better option for a flowering trailer in a pet-friendly home.

The dark colouring means it needs more light than a plain green plant. To stay healthy and produce flowers, it needs brighter indirect light than the standard green Lipstick Plant. Place it in a spot with several hours of bright indirect light per day for both the best foliage pattern and reliable blooming.

Winter Slowdown

Flowering slows or pauses from December onward as Canadian light levels drop. The dark marbled foliage remains attractive through winter even without blooms. Keep it in your brightest window, reduce watering slightly, and do not fertilize.

Toxicity

Non-toxic to cats and dogs, confirmed by the ASPCA (Aeschynanthus spp., Lipstick Plant). Safe for homes with pets and small children.

Pests

Aphids are the most common pest on the Black Pagoda, concentrating on new growth and flower bud clusters at stem tips in spring. Check the undersides of leaves monthly through winter. Mealybugs occasionally appear at leaf nodes along the trailing stems.

Other Plants You Might Like

Not sure this is the right fit? Here are three other plants our Canadian customers love. All ship across Canada and thrive in Canadian homes.

Lipstick Plant. Same plant, red flowers, green leaves.

For the standard Lipstick Plant with plain glossy green foliage and bright red tubular flowers in dark maroon tubes, the Lipstick Plant is a brighter, simpler companion that blooms reliably with the same care.

Hoya Wayetii. Dark leaves, pet-safe trailer.

For another pet-safe trailing plant with narrow dark-edged leaves that show a similar dark-toned character, the Hoya Wayetii has thick waxy foliage and a different but equally interesting bloom structure.

Tradescantia Nanouk. Purple tones, pet-safe.

For a pet-safe trailing plant with pink and purple foliage tones in a fast-growing, easy-care form, the Tradescantia Nanouk handles bright indirect light and suits a similar hanging basket or shelf position.

Common Questions

Is the Lipstick Plant Black Pagoda toxic to cats and dogs?

No. The ASPCA confirms Aeschynanthus (Lipstick Plant) is non-toxic to cats and dogs. The Black Pagoda is safe for homes with pets and small children.

Why is the silver marbling on the leaves fading?

Fading of the silver patterning on the upper leaf surface usually means insufficient light. The dark pigmentation and silver marbling of the Black Pagoda requires bright indirect light to maintain its contrast. In lower light the leaves shift toward a more uniform dark green and the silver markings become less defined. Move the plant to a brighter east-facing window. Read our guide to light requirements for indoor plants to find the right position.

Will it survive a Canadian winter indoors?

Yes. Keep it above 15 degrees C and away from cold drafts and cold glass. Flowering slows through the darkest months, which is normal. The cool period in Canadian homes in September and October before heating season is actually beneficial and triggers the next bloom cycle. Keep it in your brightest window through winter and reduce watering slightly. Our tips on keeping plants alive in winter cover what to watch for.

Good to Know

Sun: Bright indirect

Bright indirect light is needed both for the silver leaf marbling to stay vivid and for reliable flowering. An east-facing window is ideal. The darker leaf pigmentation means this plant needs more light than a plain green trailing plant.

Light: Bright indirect

A bright east- or south-facing window works year-round. The silver marbling is most vivid in good indirect light and fades in low light. From October to February keep it as close to the brightest window as possible.

Water: When top half of soil is dry

Water when the top half of the soil is dry. Every seven to ten days in spring and summer. Every two weeks in Canadian winter. As an epiphyte it tolerates slight drying between waterings. Never leave in standing water.

Humidity: Moderate

Appreciates moderate humidity. A pebble tray nearby helps during the dry forced-air heating season from November to March in Canadian homes. Do not mist directly onto the dark patterned foliage as water spots can mark the silver marbling.

Pet Friendly: Yes

Non-toxic to cats and dogs, confirmed by the ASPCA (Aeschynanthus spp.). Safe for homes with pets and small children.

Pro Tip

During the dry heating season from November to March, run your finger along the underside of a few leaves and look for fine grit or tiny moving dots. Catching mites early on this plant is harder than on a plain green leaf, so monthly checks are worth making a habit.
