The **Poinsettia** (*Euphorbia pulcherrima*) is native to Mexico, where it was cultivated by the Aztecs, who called it "cuetlaxochitl." It arrived in the United States in the 1820s thanks to Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, from whom it gets its common name. The plant's association with Christmas comes from a Mexican legend about a poor girl whose humble roadside weeds transformed into brilliant red flowers, symbolizing the Star of Bethlehem. What we often perceive as its "flowers" are actually colorful modified leaves called bracts, with the true flowers being small, yellow buds at the center.

Keeping your Poinsettia vibrant throughout the holiday season and even encouraging it to re-bloom next year is simpler than you might think:

• **Light:** Place in a spot with plenty of bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch its colorful bracts.
• **Water:** Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Ensure proper drainage and never let it sit in standing water, as this can lead to root rot.
• **Humidity:** Prefers average to slightly higher humidity. Avoid very dry environments.
