Common Questions
How often should I water the Alocasia Macrorrhiza Camouflage?
Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top inch feels dry, roughly every five to seven days in spring and summer. In a Canadian winter, cut back to every ten to fourteen days. This is a large plant with large leaves that uses more water than smaller Alocasias. Our indoor plant watering guide shows how to check correctly.
What light does it need in a Canadian home?
Bright indirect light from a large east- or south-facing window is best. It handles medium indirect light but grows more slowly and the camouflage patterning is less vivid. Avoid direct afternoon sun which scorches the broad leaves. Read our guide to light requirements for indoor plants to find the right spot.
Is the Alocasia Macrorrhiza Camouflage toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes. The ASPCA confirms Alocasia spp. is toxic to cats and dogs. The leaves contain insoluble calcium oxalates, which cause mouth pain, drooling, swelling, and vomiting if chewed. Keep it in a location that pets and small children cannot access.
How big will it get indoors?
It can reach 1.2 to 1.8 metres tall indoors with good light and warmth. The leaves are large and held on long upright stems. It is a genuine floor plant and needs a spacious spot in a bright room, not a shelf or compact corner. It grows faster in good light and slows considerably in a Canadian winter.
Why are the leaf edges turning brown?
Brown leaf edges are almost always caused by dry air. The large leaf surface loses moisture quickly in the dry heated air of Canadian homes from November onward. Move it away from heating vents, run a humidifier nearby, and check that it is not underwatered. Our tips on keeping plants alive in winter cover humidity management in more detail.
