Common Questions
How often should I water the Cuddly Cactus?
In spring and summer, water deeply when the soil is completely dry, roughly every two to three weeks. In a Canadian winter dormancy from October to February, water just once every four to six weeks with a small amount. Never water on a schedule without checking the soil first. Our indoor plant watering guide shows exactly how to check before watering.
Can I touch the soft white hair?
With care. The fine white spines look soft but on some woolly cactus varieties they are glochids, which are tiny barbed spines that can embed in skin and cause irritation. They are not painful like standard cactus spines but can be uncomfortable if they get into skin folds or eyes. Handle the plant by the pot, not the stems, and keep curious children and pets from touching it.
Is the Cuddly Cactus safe for cats and dogs?
True cacti are not listed on the ASPCA toxic plant list and pose no chemical risk. The plant material is not toxic. The risk is entirely physical from spine contact. Keep it somewhere pets and small children cannot easily touch or mouth the stems.
Why is the stem turning yellow or brown at the base?
Yellowing or browning at the base is almost always root rot from overwatering, especially in a Canadian winter when the cactus is dormant and the cool moist soil stays wet too long. Stop watering immediately and let the soil dry out completely. Ensure the pot has drainage holes and the cactus is in a well-draining cactus mix.
Will it survive a Canadian winter indoors?
Yes, easily. This is one of the best plants for Canadian winters. It goes dormant, needs almost no attention, and the dry forced-air heating in Ontario and Quebec homes does not bother it at all. Keep it in your sunniest window, above 10°C, water it very sparingly, and leave it alone until spring.
