About This Plant

Dwarf Umbrella Tree (Schefflera arboricola) is native to Taiwan and the southern Chinese coast, where it grows as a woody shrub or small tree in humid subtropical conditions. Indoors it reaches 60 to 120 cm tall in a compact pot and is one of the faster-growing, easier-care houseplants available for Canadian homes.

The umbrella-shaped leaves create a lush effect. Each leaf cluster of seven to nine glossy leaflets in a radiating whorl gives the plant a distinctly tropical character that is different from simple-leaved houseplants. As it branches and fills out, it develops a natural tree-like structure with visible woody stems.

Keep it away from pets and children. The ASPCA confirms Schefflera spp. is toxic to cats and dogs. The plant contains calcium oxalates and falcarinol that cause oral irritation, drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing if chewed. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
