Ellwoodii Cypress

The **Lawson Cypress** (*Chamaecyparis lawsoniana*) is native to the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. The 'Ellwoodii' cultivar is a popular dwarf variety prized specifically for its slow growth rate, narrow, upright habit, and dense, slightly pendulous foliage that ranges from blue-green to steel gray. Because it maintains a compact size and graceful shape with very little pruning, it is an excellent choice for containers and is often sold as a festive indoor plant, particularly during the winter months. Give it the right conditions, and you'll enjoy its elegant structure for years.

The Ellwoodii Cypress is relatively easy to care for, but it does have a few specific preferences, especially when kept indoors. Follow these tips to help it stay lush and green:

• **Light:** Give it bright, indirect light, and even a few hours of gentle morning sun is welcome. A bright window is ideal. Too little light can cause the inner foliage to brown.
• **Water:** This is critical! Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Cypress trees do not tolerate drying out completely. Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil is dry, but ensure excellent drainage.
• **Humidity:** High humidity is a must, especially in heated indoor environments. Use a humidifier nearby or place the pot on a pebble tray filled with water to prevent the foliage from browning.
• **Soil:** Use a well-draining, slightly acidic potting mix. A standard mix blended with some peat moss and perlite is usually a great choice.
• **Temperature:** It prefers cool to moderate temperatures, ideally between 50 to 70°F (10 to 21°C). Keep it away from heat vents, fireplaces, or hot drafts, which can quickly dry out the foliage.
• **Feeding:** When grown as an indoor container plant, you can feed it lightly once a month during the spring and summer with a balanced, liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength.

Like many conifers, the Ellwoodii Cypress can occasionally attract pests, especially when conditions are dry indoors. Regular misting and inspection are the best defense.
