Common Questions
How often should I water the Ellwoodii Cypress?
Water sparingly when the top inch of soil is dry, roughly every two to three weeks in spring and summer and less in winter. This plant does not like being kept wet. Good drainage is essential. Our indoor plant watering guide shows how to check moisture correctly.
Does it need to go outside in summer?
Ideally yes. Placing the Ellwoodii on a sheltered Canadian balcony or porch from late May through September in bright indirect to partial direct light rejuvenates it after indoor winter conditions. It tolerates outdoor Ontario and Quebec summers well. Bring it back in before temperatures drop below 5 degrees C at night.
Is the Ellwoodii Cypress safe for pets?
It is not listed in the ASPCA confirmed toxic or non-toxic database. Multiple horticultural sources describe Chamaecyparis as non-toxic. As a precaution, keep it out of reach of pets and small children until confirmed either way.
Why is the foliage turning brown inside?
Browning inner foliage on conifers is often normal seasonal shedding of old inner growth. It becomes more noticeable in dry indoor conditions. If outer foliage is also browning, the plant is likely too warm or too dry. Move it to a cooler, brighter spot and check watering.
Will it survive a Canadian winter indoors?
Yes, and unlike most houseplants, it actually prefers the cooler temperatures of a Canadian winter. Keep it in a cool bright room between 5 and 15 degrees C, away from central heating vents. Read our tips on keeping plants alive in winter for more.
