About This Plant

Fairy Castle Cactus (Acanthocereus tetragonus, often labelled Cereus tetragonus) is native to Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean, It is slow growing, adding only a few centimetres per year, and can live for many decades without outgrowing its pot.

The multi-column castle-like form is a distinctive cactus shape. The irregular clustering of columns at staggered heights, each studded with fine spines, creates a natural sculptural form that looks hand-designed. No two plants grow identically.

Not listed by the ASPCA as toxic, but keep it away from pets and children. Fairy Castle Cactus (Acanthocereus tetragonus) is not on the ASPCA confirmed toxic plant list. It is generally regarded as non-toxic. However, the small but numerous spines are a physical hazard for curious pets and small children.

Light: Bright direct

A south-facing window is the only suitable position year-round. From October to February in Canada, keep it as close to the glass as possible. The reduced winter light triggers natural dormancy which is healthy.

Water: When completely dry
