About This Plant

Hoya Mathilde is a hybrid of Hoya serpens and Hoya carnosa, combining characteristics of both parent plants. It produces small, rounded, slightly textured, bright green waxy leaves. It grows as a slow to moderate trailing or vining plant.

The ball-shaped flower clusters have intense fragrance. While many Hoyas are fragrant, Mathilde produces tightly packed, spherical clusters of flowers with a sweet, heavy, honey-like scent noticeably stronger than Australis, Carnosa, or Pubicalyx.

Safe for cats and dogs. The ASPCA confirms Hoya spp. is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Mathilde is pet-safe. The Hoya Pubicalyx is another pet-safe Hoya that blooms reliably with a different silver-speckled leaf for comparison.

The rounded leaf shape distinguishes it from both parent plants. Hoya serpens has very small round leaves and Hoya carnosa has larger oval ones. Mathilde sits between the two, producing a rounder, more compact leaf than Carnosa and a larger, more robust leaf than Serpens.

Winter Slowdown

Growth slows or stops from November onward. Reduce watering to every three to four weeks. Keep above 15 degrees C and in your brightest east-facing window. Mathilde may continue to hold or develop flower buds through winter in a bright east-facing window.

Pests

Common Questions

Why does the fragrance seem stronger in the evening?

Like many Hoyas, Mathilde releases its fragrance most intensely at dusk and into the night to attract nocturnal pollinators. If you are in the room during the day the scent is present but mild. In the evening in a smaller room it can be very strong. If the evening fragrance is too intense for a bedroom, move the plant to a living area during bloom periods.

The flower buds appeared then dropped without opening. What happened?

Bud drop is caused by being moved, a temperature drop below 15 degrees C, overwatering, or very low humidity. The moment you see buds forming, do not move the plant under any circumstances. Keep watering consistent and keep temperatures stable. Moving the plant to take a photo or show the buds is the most common cause of bud drop.

How is the flower shape different from other Hoyas?

Mathilde inherits from its Hoya serpens parent a tendency to form tightly packed, ball-shaped umbels where the individual star flowers cluster densely together. Standard Carnosa umbels are looser. The dense packing of Mathilde flower clusters gives them a more spherical, compact appearance and concentrates the fragrance more intensely.

Will it flower in its first year?

Unlikely. Hoya Mathilde typically needs to be an established plant with multiple mature vine sections before it flowers. Most growers see first blooms in the second or third year. Patience, consistent bright indirect light, and never cutting old flower stalks are the three requirements.

How to take care of Hoya Mathilde

Sun: Indirect

Bright indirect light produces the most vigorous growth and the best flowering conditions. An east-facing window is ideal. Direct sun scorches the rounded leaves.

Light: Medium to bright indirect

A spot near an east-facing window works year-round. From October to February in Canada, keep it in the brightest available spot. If buds are present through winter, absolutely do not change the plant position.

Water: When top 1-2 inches are dry

Water when the top one to two inches of soil are completely dry. Every ten to fourteen days in spring and summer, every three to four weeks in Canadian winter.

Humidity: Low to moderate

Handles the dry Canadian heating season well. A pebble tray nearby during the driest winter months. No humidifier required.
