Hoya Neon produces tiny, thick, waxy, heart-shaped leaves in a vivid lime-green to chartreuse-yellow colour that is different from the dark green of Hoyas. This combination of unusual colour and miniature size, makes it a sought-after addition to a Hoya collection.

The vivid lime-green heart-shaped leaves are unique. The entire Hoya genus is green with occasional silver, cream, or pink accents. Hoya Neon leaves are a vivid, warm chartreuse-yellow-green that reads as almost glowing in good light.

Safe for cats and dogs. The ASPCA confirms Hoya spp. is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Hoya Neon is pet-safe. The Hoya Krohniana Silver is another miniature slow-growing collector Hoya, predominantly silver rather than lime-green.

Winter Slowdown

Growth slows or stops from November onward. Reduce watering to every three to four weeks. Keep above 15 degrees C and in your brightest east-facing window. The lime-green colour may become slightly less vivid in lower winter light.

Will the lime-green colour stay vivid or fade as the plant ages?

Each leaf keeps its lime-green colour throughout its life. The colour does not significantly darken with age on individual leaves. However, new growth is the most vivid and warm chartreuse, while older leaves may have a slightly more yellow-green tone. The plant in bright indirect light looks more vivid overall than one in lower light.

How does Hoya Neon compare to Hoya Krohniana in terms of care?

Care is nearly identical. Both are miniature heart-leaf Hoyas that grow slowly, need bright indirect light, have waxy drought-tolerant leaves, and need monthly mealybug checks. The main practical difference is colour. Mealybugs are more visible on Neon against the pale leaf, which is an advantage for early detection.

Can I grow it in a terrarium?

Will it flower and what do the flowers look like?

Yes, in time. Hoya Neon produces small star-shaped flower clusters similar in scale to those of Hoya Krohniana. Keep the vine in bright indirect light, never cut old flower stalks, and wait for the plant to establish and mature. Flowering typically takes two or more years from a young cutting.

How to take care of Hoya Neon

Sun: Indirect

Bright indirect light keeps the lime-green colour vivid. An east-facing window is ideal. In lower light the chartreuse tones become less saturated. Direct sun scorches the pale leaves quickly.

Light: Medium to bright indirect

A spot near an east-facing window works year-round. From October to February, the brightest available spot is important for maintaining colour saturation. Pale, washed-out new leaves in spring mean the winter position was too dark.

Water: When top 1-2 inches are dry

Water when the top inch of soil is completely dry. Every ten to fourteen days in spring and summer, every three to four weeks in Canadian winter. Small pot, slow grower, low water needs overall.

Humidity: Low to moderate

Handles average Canadian indoor air well. A pebble tray nearby helps from November to March given the small leaf size.
