About This Plant

Jade Plant (Crassula ovata) is native to South Africa and Mozambique. It is a slow-growing, and low-maintenance houseplant available. A jade plant that is well cared for can outlive most other houseplants by decades.

It develops into a sculptural miniature tree over years, unlike most houseplants. Jade Plant changes and develops: stems thicken, branches multiply, and the overall form becomes progressively more tree-like over years. The Ficus Ginseng Bonsai is another plant that develops a sculptural tree-like form over time.

Keep it away from pets and children. The ASPCA confirms Crassula ovata is toxic to cats and dogs. The mechanism is not fully identified but ingestion causes vomiting, depression, and loss of coordination (ataxia) in dogs and cats. Keep out of reach of pets and small children.

The leaves are shrivelling and going soft. What is wrong?

Shrivelling, soft leaves on Jade Plant are caused by the opposite of what most people assume: underwatering, not overwatering. The thick leaves store water and shrivelling means reserves are depleted. Water the plant thoroughly, allow complete drainage, and the leaves will firm up within a day or two. Overwatered jade plants show mushy stems at the base and yellowing lower leaves, not shrivelling.

Water: When completely dry

Water only when the soil is completely dry. Every two to three weeks in spring and summer, once every three to four weeks in Canadian winter dormancy. Never leave in standing water. This plant tolerates months of drought better than a single episode of overwatering.
